Each year, Zenoss surveys hundreds of organizations about their use of converged infrastructure – those packaged combinations of compute, storage, network, and virtualization that are increasingly powering the intelligent data center. The 2015 survey results are in, and we’re sharing them in the 2015 State of Converged Infrastructure Report.
I was excited that the survey showed how people are achieving operations agility with their converged infrastructure. What’s operations agility? One CIO explained in a write-in comment, "The agility to provide new services is better and easier, and therefore we can give a faster response to our customers."
So, is a common, shared environment provided by a converged infrastructure solution enough to drive agility? No, our survey respondents heavily rely on provisioning and automation tools. In fact, they use an average of two tools each.
This table summarizes what we were told. Notable changes since last year were the falloff in the use of vCloud and the high use of OpenStack. And did you think of Cisco as a software company? Well, two of the five most commonly used converged infrastructure automation tools are built by Cisco!
We at Zenoss use these survey results to help us with product planning. In the chart, the green bars represent tools where Zenoss customers have deployed working integrations. Automating converged infrastructure deployments has been a key focus for us over the last several years.
Does this combination of automation tools and converged infrastructure work? Absolutely. Sixty-five percent of respondents reported achieving better customer service, with 75 percent reporting improved availability due to faster mean time to repair.
