Forbes has announced their Top Ten Most Innovative Companies In America and Red Hat has landed as number 4 on the list. A remarkable achievement for a commercial open source company that was founded on humble beginnings in 1993 and has grown to the world’s first billion-dollar commercial open source software company.
Red Hat’s mission is clearly stated as:
“To be the catalyst in communities of customers, contributors, and partners creating better technology the open source way.”
To put it another way, Jim Whitehurst, President and CEO of Red Hat said this in today’s Red Hat Press Release, announcing this recognition from Forbes:
“Innovation is at the very core of Red Hat’s DNA, whether you’re talking about how we operate our business and manage our people, how we work with enterprises, partners, and the open source community to create better technologies, or how our customers are innovating using Red Hat solutions.”
From Red Hat Enterprise Linux to JBoss Enterprise Middleware to Red Hat’s preview version of Enterprise-Ready OpenStack Distribution, Red Hat is an important contributor, commercializer, and champion of open source software.
The future looks bright for Red Hat as they play a key role within the both the open source cloud and the burgeoning Platform as a Service (PaaS) market; Red Hat is one of eight Platinum Members of the OpenStack Foundation and provides OpenShift as a PaaS offering.
