Zenoss Adds Native VMware Management, Extends Platform for Enterprises and Cloud Services Providers

Annapolis, MD (November 12th, 2008)  – Zenoss Inc, a leading provider of commercial open source systems and network management software, today rolled a new version of its award-winning product suite.  In addition to other enhancements, the new release adds native VMware monitoring across the full virtualization infrastructure lifecycle.  This latest version, Zenoss 2.3, now enables enterprise IT staff and cloud services providers to monitor their virtual and physical IT infrastructures with a single, integrated product that costs significantly less than traditional offerings.

“Two of the biggest issues currently facing IT are virtualization and shrinking budgets,” said Erik Dahl, CTO of Zenoss. “Zenoss 2.3 addresses both of these head on with a powerful monitoring solution for both physical and virtual environments that not only costs less to acquire, but also saves time and manpower through quick installation, auto-discovery of infrastructure assets, and drop-in performance templates.”

Zenoss Enterprise delivers functionality across the major IT management lifecycle disciplines (such as inventory discovery, configuration detection, network mapping, availability and performance monitoring, and event management) and across the full physical and virtual infrastructure. Integration of Inventory data in a central Configuration Database allows Zenoss Enterprise users to view all performance, availability, and event data with a single web console. The product also includes remediation, allowing Zenoss to take corrective actions automatically when problems occur.

“Although technology departments will be under continued pressure to lower costs and trim budgets, IT systems and applications must continue to deliver appropriate service levels to insure overall business success,” said Milind Govekar, Research Vice President at Gartner. “Thus customers will look for solutions that have lower initial cost, lower TCO and quick implementation with tangible results.”

In addition to several minor enhancements, new features of Zenoss Enterprise 2.3 include:

Native, Agentless VMware Monitoring of Entire Virtualization Infrastructure

  • Automatic discovery and inventory of all Virtual Infrastructure (VI3) components including Virtual Machines, ESX Servers, clusters, and VMware data stores
  • Physical and Virtual resource usage and performance (memory, disk, CPU, and more)
  • Real-time detection when Virtual Machines move from one VMware host to another (called VMotion)
  • Physical and Virtual performance and availability information correlated and displayed in a single, central web console

Enhanced, Agentless Monitoring of Microsoft Windows Servers & Desktops

  • Enhanced Windows collection services improve scalability, security and fault tolerance
  • Agentless full lifecycle monitoring of Windows servers and desktops including hardware, service and software discovery, centralized event collection, availability monitoring, performance monitoring, and reporting
  • Standard, out-of-the-box monitoring templates
  • Support for Windows 2008 and Windows Vista

Enhanced Agentless Monitoring of Java Applications

  • Enhanced JMX collection services improve scalability, security and fault tolerance

Zenoss also announced a new release of Zenoss Core, the company’s award-winning community version of its network monitoring software. The new version includes modeling-based management using WMI (Windows Management Interface), new Windows Service monitoring, and 30 new drop-in management extensions, developed by Zenoss Community members, for systems such as Cisco Security Appliance and Brocade switches.

The latest Zenoss version was developed in conjunction with more than 40,000 community members who provided product input, monitoring extensions and beta testing.
