[01-May-2008 15:04:14] hi all
[01-May-2008 15:04:19] <_chris_> hello
[01-May-2008 15:10:34] hi guys i am trying to monitor Disk space and Memory usage what process parameter should i setup for my windows machine
[01-May-2008 15:11:51] Hi everybody, I need to get an SNMP table and show it on Zenoss. please assist.
[01-May-2008 15:16:34] magnachef u there?
[01-May-2008 15:17:14] <_chris_> masaghi: maybe this would work better if you described what you have tried so far
[01-May-2008 15:25:32] I want to get list of users logged in a linux server.
[01-May-2008 15:25:49] So I want to use net-snmp to get a defined OID and return the list
[01-May-2008 15:26:06] I don't know better solution. I think I can do this by using command instead of SNMP. but I dont' know how!
[01-May-2008 15:26:20] could you please help me!
[01-May-2008 15:33:27] is there anyone here helping me?
[01-May-2008 15:35:55] <_chris_> maybe your question is better suited for the forums.
[01-May-2008 15:36:45] thanks a lot for your consideration
[01-May-2008 15:37:34] I have another question: Zenhub daemon on my server stops without any log!!!!
[01-May-2008 15:38:27] It starts at the beginning and stops after a second!
[01-May-2008 15:38:57] It was working fine and now I have this problem with it
[01-May-2008 15:44:06] masaghi: I think this works: zenhub run -v10
[01-May-2008 15:44:19] that'll keep it in the foreground with extra debugging
[01-May-2008 15:49:11] how can i monitor disk and memory space
[01-May-2008 15:51:48] <_chris_> idea4gud: disk and memory information is returned by SNMP agents. if you model a device you should get that information automatically.
[01-May-2008 15:53:13] i just the enter the device ip adress
[01-May-2008 15:53:30] do i need to change in perf parameter like in setting
[01-May-2008 15:56:06] it doesnt get me automaticalluy
[01-May-2008 15:56:18] also in the status and perf monitor i have localhost
[01-May-2008 15:56:22] do i have to tht
[01-May-2008 15:56:28] *change

[01-May-2008 16:12:17] malbon: yo
[01-May-2008 16:12:45] thanks
[01-May-2008 16:13:54] mray: did you see my email?
[01-May-2008 16:14:33] malbon: no, was it direct or to a list?
[01-May-2008 16:15:05] malbon: I gotta go to a meeting, I'll be back
[01-May-2008 16:15:09] mray: direct and from my $current_employer
[01-May-2008 16:15:19] mray: no prob, ping me when you're back please.
[01-May-2008 16:27:53] Hi, Zenoss it seems to be a really good application if I refer to comments on the web, but I have installed Zenoss on a server, but is everything except "straight forward" configuration, I can only see some of the devices, but not much information, and even nothing if I talk about my linux servers.
[01-May-2008 16:28:23] I have installed snmp on all of the servers but no answer.
[01-May-2008 16:28:41] the default config file will only allow access from localhost.
[01-May-2008 16:29:04] You'll need to edit /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf to allow access from your zenoss server in most distros.
[01-May-2008 16:29:27] or if you're using HP gear, point zenoss at the iLO and use it instead (it proxies snmp)
[01-May-2008 16:30:16] Does anyone know how to fix this error: Error reading value for "ifHCInUcastPkts"
[01-May-2008 16:30:55] zenops: snmpwalk the device, to check the device supports that mib.
[01-May-2008 16:32:04] is there any howto on monitoring processes on nix box?
[01-May-2008 16:33:11] maj: the admin guide is your friend :)
[01-May-2008 16:33:13] ok let me check
[01-May-2008 16:33:26] malbon do we need to on the server snmp.conf
[01-May-2008 16:33:29] or on the client
[01-May-2008 16:33:41] the client which you wish to monitor
[01-May-2008 16:33:52] also what abt windows macchine
[01-May-2008 16:33:58] well actually zenoss is the client, and the endpoint is the server
[01-May-2008 16:34:11] i have snmp enabled with trap service but still i get no information
[01-May-2008 16:34:14] have you got snmp installed on your windows machines?
[01-May-2008 16:34:49] yeah i have SNMP and SNMP trap enabled
[01-May-2008 16:35:16] have you done an snmpwalk from the server that zenoss is running on to make sure that the two can communicate?
[01-May-2008 16:35:30] yes
[01-May-2008 16:36:09] can you define still then? how long have you been waiting?
[01-May-2008 16:37:13] i did snmpwalk now and it gave huge MIB info
[01-May-2008 16:37:58] ok so the profile in zenoss, have you moved it to the /Server/Windows device class?
[01-May-2008 16:38:04] yes
[01-May-2008 16:38:12] and you have re-modelled it?
[01-May-2008 16:38:22] (after pushing the changes?)
[01-May-2008 16:38:35] Does anyone know if zenoss (community version) can monitor the traffic of a nfs-server?
[01-May-2008 16:39:14] Sure thanks
[01-May-2008 16:40:33] i am lookin for HD,Memory space and CPU utilization of the device
[01-May-2008 16:40:53] but i dont get any info
[01-May-2008 16:44:31] someone?
[01-May-2008 16:48:31] idea4gud: sounds like you need to remodel the device to me
[01-May-2008 16:49:18] malbon: I can not find any configuration via IP addresses, only via Domains, but at the moment I'm working only with IP addresses no domains at all, I am trying to install Zenoss so I can monitor everything and then install a DNS server...
[01-May-2008 16:51:06] malbon: remodel the device to me?
[01-May-2008 16:51:28] tukulitosakayama: go to basics, make sure that snmpwalk works
[01-May-2008 16:52:07] idea4gud: remodel the device
[01-May-2008 16:52:21] OK, from Zenoss server
[01-May-2008 16:52:40] idea4gud: then wait about 15mins, because RRDtool needs at least 3 readings before it displays any values
[01-May-2008 16:52:48] tukulitosakayama: yes, exactly.
[01-May-2008 17:40:01] does the snmpd.conf on Zenoss box need to have the same config as the other servers, I have Centos 5 on the two sides (to start)
[01-May-2008 17:45:33] malbon: I don't see an email from you
[01-May-2008 17:45:42] malbon: but I've got a lot of filters
[01-May-2008 17:47:51] malbon: oh wait, the Jython stuff?
[01-May-2008 17:48:55] Dekel: I'm not sure of a good way to monitor the traffic on an NFS system
[01-May-2008 17:50:28] <_chris_> Dekel: how does your NFS provide performance metrics?
[01-May-2008 17:51:21] <_chris_> Dekel: zenoss can run commands, capture their output, and record what is produced.
[01-May-2008 17:53:27] I'm doing something wrong? is there any document where I can find how to setup snmpd.conf ?
[01-May-2008 17:53:27] snmpwalk 192.168.2.64
[01-May-2008 17:53:27] snmpwalk: No securityName specified
[01-May-2008 17:53:58] <_chris_> snmpwalk -c public -v 1 192.168.2.64 .1
[01-May-2008 17:54:27] <_chris_> tukulitosakayama: consult the documentation for your distribution. each distro configures /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf differently.
[01-May-2008 17:54:57] <_chris_> also consult the security settings on your distro. some distros bind the snmpd to 127.0.0.1 and thus remote hosts (e.g. zenoss) can't query them.
[01-May-2008 17:58:15] mray, _chris_, if zenoss only run commands and so it sounds like a nagios-like system
[01-May-2008 17:59:08] <_chris_> Dekel: nagios-style output is one technique for collecting performance information. there are other (e.g. snmp, wmi) techniques as well.
[01-May-2008 17:59:40] zenoss workswith snmp, right?
[01-May-2008 18:00:05] definitely
[01-May-2008 18:00:07] mray: yup, jython goodness
[01-May-2008 18:00:16] <_chris_> yes, zenoss works with snmp. if you read the user's guide you'll get an idea of what zenoss can do
[01-May-2008 18:00:17] malbon: working on the followup
[01-May-2008 18:00:31] well... my problem is that i have a nfs-server, which serves many computers in my organization
[01-May-2008 18:00:32] malbon: I was out of town the last week with LinuxFest NW
[01-May-2008 18:01:52] and i'm not sure why, but we have some troubles with this server... and we are not really sure what cause these troubles
[01-May-2008 18:04:21] <_chris_> it might be more productive if you instead described what you know about the server and what you would like to do with zenoss. for example, my NFS server has a perl based API i can call locally to retrieve the number of reads and writes per second. how do i get zenoss to capture that information, graph it, and alert me when the values exceed some range?
[01-May-2008 18:06:04] malbon: sent
[01-May-2008 18:08:19] _chris_, the problem is that i'm not sure about the ranges...
[01-May-2008 18:08:48] the problems are number of connections, read/writes, memory, swap, user-auth and much more...
[01-May-2008 18:09:06] <_chris_> are you capturing this information in zenoss already?
[01-May-2008 18:09:08] it might also be a problem with the configuration of the server
[01-May-2008 18:09:21] i don't have zenoss yet
[01-May-2008 18:09:35] mray: I've heard some rubbish excuses. :P (only joking)
[01-May-2008 18:09:53] i'm looking for some tool to monitor this server so i can find the problems :)
[01-May-2008 18:10:19] <_chris_> seems like a good first step is to install zenoss and begin monitoring your NFS server
[01-May-2008 18:12:28] monitoring for what exactly, this is the question...
[01-May-2008 18:12:38] do i need to write all of the tests my self?
[01-May-2008 18:12:54] <_chris_> well ya -
[01-May-2008 18:13:04] <_chris_> we don't have out-of-the-box configurations for every NFS/NAS server out there
[01-May-2008 18:13:09] not the answer i was looking for :)
[01-May-2008 18:13:12] <_chris_> so if you've got some NFS server
[01-May-2008 18:13:25] <_chris_> and you can programmatically access it's performance information
[01-May-2008 18:13:56] <_chris_> if you'd like some onsite handholding there's always the professional services option ($$) :)
[01-May-2008 18:14:13] yeah, i know
[01-May-2008 18:14:34] are you familiar with ntop?
[01-May-2008 18:14:42] <_chris_> sure
[01-May-2008 18:17:05] part of what i'm getting from this tool is nfs data monitoring
[01-May-2008 18:17:43] mray: so that's basically no then.
[01-May-2008 18:18:09] i was looking for a dedicated nfs monitoring tool
[01-May-2008 18:18:23] malbon: is there a specific appserver/application you want to monitor?
[01-May-2008 18:18:36] thought that the zenoss had a plugin for that...
[01-May-2008 18:19:02] Dekel: I'd love to have one too
[01-May-2008 18:19:13] mray: yes, Caplin which I already have working with the existing JMX connector, but the connector has too many warts to be useful.
[01-May-2008 18:20:49] <_chris_> Dekel: the platforms open and all the code is available. if zenoss doesn't do something you need you can always develop a zenpack to improve zenoss or you can send in a community contribution
[01-May-2008 18:21:08] mray: anyhow I'll respond to the email. catch you later.
[01-May-2008 18:21:19] malbon: _chris_ will look at it too
[01-May-2008 18:21:57] Dekel: If you're interested in working on a ZenPack, feel free to email me at mray@zenoss.com
[01-May-2008 18:25:49] i just wrote a pass script for net-snmpd to access all the stats via an snmp oid template in zenoss. works great.
[01-May-2008 18:26:21] <_chris_> kgoedte1: cool! we have someone else that did that too and he sweats it!
[01-May-2008 18:26:23] provides all the nfs op counters
[01-May-2008 18:29:00] also i rewrote the community provided netapp zenpack and made large modifications to the zenoss provided apache zenpack
[01-May-2008 18:29:45] but i never repackaged them :[
[01-May-2008 18:35:32] kgoedte1: If you want to contribute it back, feel free to send it to me at mray@zenoss.com
[01-May-2008 18:36:00] no rush though, we're busy getting 2.2 out the door
[01-May-2008 18:45:25] I am getting this messages: Error reading value for "ifInOctets" on....
[01-May-2008 18:45:45] <_chris_> zenops: the SNMP agent for that device isn't returning that OID.
[01-May-2008 18:45:51] <_chris_> what type of device is it?
[01-May-2008 18:45:58] Windows server
[01-May-2008 18:46:02] 2003
[01-May-2008 18:46:06] <_chris_> are you running the SNMP Informant?
[01-May-2008 18:46:31] and it is running snmp and informant....Let me check again
[01-May-2008 18:47:43] yes it is installed..
[01-May-2008 18:48:20] <_chris_> that's strange. are there any other events that complain about interface metrics not being read from the server?
[01-May-2008 18:49:19] in the perf tab, I have way too many graphs like 10 but only have of them work
[01-May-2008 18:49:38] have = half
[01-May-2008 18:50:36] Actually I have 18 graph tables
[01-May-2008 18:51:11] and 10 of them are only pulling data
[01-May-2008 19:09:06] <_chris_> __ian__ has arrived!
[01-May-2008 19:09:30] <_chris_> __ian__: any pancakes today for lunch?
[01-May-2008 19:09:50] <__ian__> Sadly, no. Rockin it mac and cheese style.
[01-May-2008 19:22:58] <_chris_> i rocked it mac and cheese style last night. i added some stoufers stuffing and chicken on the side though.
[01-May-2008 19:27:01] <_chris_> __jason__ is here too!
[01-May-2008 19:28:24] My count puts us at 5 Zenoss employees, if anyone has questions now's the time!
[01-May-2008 19:29:43] sounds good...Is there a way to lock Processes and Services across an entire class or System group?
[01-May-2008 19:31:41] or even add services across a class
[01-May-2008 19:36:10] I'm having weird issues with OS Processes I have a regexp for xinetd. when it originally ran, it found one with name "xinetd" and one with "xinetd -stayalive -reuse -pidfile /var/run/xinetd" randomly today, the "xinetd" process created an alert that "Process not running: xinetd". after doing an SNMP walk, I received the following lines:
[01-May-2008 19:36:10] host.hrSWRun.hrSWRunTable.hrSWRunEntry.hrSWRunName.25458 = "xinetd"
[01-May-2008 19:36:10] host.hrSWRun.hrSWRunTable.hrSWRunEntry.hrSWRunPath.25458 = "xinetd"
[01-May-2008 19:36:10] host.hrSWRun.hrSWRunTable.hrSWRunEntry.hrSWRunParameters.25458 = "-stayalive -resuse -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid".
[01-May-2008 19:36:12] not sure why it's not finding xinetd process
[01-May-2008 19:37:55] dunno, Im sure Mac and Cheese would solve the problem though
[01-May-2008 19:38:05] yeah, already tried that
[01-May-2008 19:48:22] I am getting this messages: Error reading value for "ifInOctets" ifouterror, ifhcoutoctets, ifoperstatus..etc...
[01-May-2008 19:48:49] the device is a cisco switch cat3750
[01-May-2008 19:49:11] <_chris_> zenops: the snmp agent on your switch isn't returning those OIDs for some reason
[01-May-2008 19:49:26] <_chris_> maybe you need to login to the console and give the switch permission to return those values?
[01-May-2008 19:52:05] it has already been done
[01-May-2008 19:53:57] Thet were working fine until loaded all the mibs at once using *.* I have done it before with no problem..
[01-May-2008 19:55:03] How do I troubleshoot to have these oIDs to be read..

[02-May-2008 14:13:40] zenops: well, your device is not returning a value for that oid
[02-May-2008 14:55:27] is there a way that I can have development servers and production servers in zenoss, but have separate event console views so that Dev doesn't show up in the prodcution list?
[02-May-2008 15:08:59] how about using the dashboard so you can have an object watch list, one for production and one for development ??
[02-May-2008 15:10:13] but wouldn't (in essence) that take away the event console functionality?
[02-May-2008 15:11:09] i know that you can specify whether a device is production, test, etc
[02-May-2008 15:11:29] seems like it should be trivial to have an event console that can filter on that
[02-May-2008 15:12:14] actually the event console can filter production or development ....
[02-May-2008 15:12:53] how about creating to classes--- development and production ... so when you are in the event console you can
[02-May-2008 15:13:17] see clearly if it comes from production servers or development servers
[02-May-2008 15:13:44] how do I filter between prod and dev in the console?
[02-May-2008 15:14:17] you click in the top ... it says " eventClass" and you can filter them
[02-May-2008 15:14:43] works the same for "device", "component", "eventClass" , etc. etc.
[02-May-2008 15:14:51] eventClass has a correlation of dev or production?
[02-May-2008 15:15:06] my eventClass has /Status/IpService, etc
[02-May-2008 15:15:15] nop... you have to create a class for each one..
[02-May-2008 15:15:29] and then map your events to the classes tou create
[02-May-2008 15:15:35] so you can classify them...
[02-May-2008 15:16:09] for example... go to the "groups" option in the left panel...
[02-May-2008 15:16:28] ok
[02-May-2008 15:16:37] and create dev and prod in there
[02-May-2008 15:16:52] you can see sub-groups.. click on the small triangle to add a New Organizer
[02-May-2008 15:16:56] yep
[02-May-2008 15:17:15] yeah, I've set up groups under the Systems
[02-May-2008 15:17:28] not sure what the Groups section was for
[02-May-2008 15:17:53] once you have both... you could and n - subgroups to each one... say " linux server " or "windonws server "
[02-May-2008 15:17:53] I see what you're saying though
[02-May-2008 15:18:22] once you have such goups....you can add devices to each group
[02-May-2008 15:18:37] I was just hoping that I could use the data that already exists about each server
[02-May-2008 15:18:53] can I do the same for "Systems"?
[02-May-2008 15:19:03] instead of using "Groups"
[02-May-2008 15:19:45] yep.... it is a matter of trying
[02-May-2008 15:20:16] works the same if you create event classes
[02-May-2008 15:20:25] you go to events in the left panel
[02-May-2008 15:20:35] then you can see a list of sub-classes
[02-May-2008 15:21:03] then you may create "development" and "production" the same was
[02-May-2008 15:21:08] way
[02-May-2008 15:21:36] and finally you map these event classes with the events you see in the event console list
[02-May-2008 15:25:34] in my case the dashboard makes it all right because gives me a summary of events of each group in a view
[02-May-2008 15:55:07] hi everybody
[02-May-2008 15:55:07] I need a help.
[02-May-2008 15:55:07] Is there anybody here to help me to get an SNMP table read to ZENOSS and show it in the frontend?
[02-May-2008 15:55:07] I need this to get a private MIB table rows and show them in Zenoss.
[02-May-2008 15:55:07] Please tutor me!
[02-May-2008 16:00:54] masaghi.... I don't fully understand your question.... are you monitoring any device in Zenoss ?
[02-May-2008 16:14:34] I extended net-snmp to support a private MIB table that gives some information from a linux server.
[02-May-2008 16:14:41] Now I need to get this MIB table and show it in Zenoss
[02-May-2008 16:14:48] I don't know what I shoud to do
[02-May-2008 16:15:17] garnica: please help me
[02-May-2008 16:21:45] masaghi: ok... calm down.... from the left panel of the Zenoss server click on "device List"... is there any item on the list ??
[02-May-2008 16:24:33] yes
[02-May-2008 16:31:48] masaghi: click on any of the devices in the device list.... this will be the target for an SNMP Request
[02-May-2008 16:33:21] masaghi:you should see the "Status" tab of the device
[02-May-2008 18:14:21] ok.... I am monitoring 15 devices on a zenoss server... say xxx.xxx.xxx.20 and I have a second zenoss server say xxx.xxx.xxx.55 . What would you do to receive all trap messages in 55 when they are received in 20 ??
[02-May-2008 18:15:03] without making any changes in the 15 devices being monitored ?
[02-May-2008 18:17:02] so traps are going from .55 to .20?
[02-May-2008 18:17:43] so traps can be going from .20 to .55
[02-May-2008 18:18:31] you can send the traps to both
[02-May-2008 18:18:52] just set that up in your config
[02-May-2008 18:19:32] that way both (theorhetically) will get the same/all traps
[02-May-2008 18:20:02] yep... that would involve modifying the 15 devs being monitored wich are located somewhat far
[02-May-2008 18:20:33] you could setup a trap proxy
[02-May-2008 18:20:58] so they'd all send to the proxy on .20 and have it send to both systems
[02-May-2008 18:21:00] I was wondering.... is not there a way to enroute traps in xxx.20 to xxx.50 too ?
[02-May-2008 18:21:17] ok
[02-May-2008 18:21:22] sounds good
[02-May-2008 18:21:52] so I should set up a proxy in .20
[02-May-2008 18:24:28] yeah
[02-May-2008 18:28:12] thanks ! I will dive on deploying that proxy...
[02-May-2008 18:29:38] np
[02-May-2008 18:32:49] forwarding traps is one of the primary functions of snmptrapd
[02-May-2008 18:42:40] ping npmcallum
[02-May-2008 18:49:57] Is it easy to generate a custom report that includes all devices and their management IP in the web interface, or would that have to be done in TALES?
[02-May-2008 18:50:39] tada
[02-May-2008 18:50:45] ok thanks locohost ! trying it !
[02-May-2008 19:05:54] probably use the net-snmp room if you need help, i dont remember the syntax, something like traphandle 1.3
[02-May-2008 19:10:26] where's the setting for what time I kick off zenmodler?
[02-May-2008 19:10:54] I know it's every 6 hours by default, but it's been running during the day and slowing down the system
[02-May-2008 19:11:20] <_chris__> magnachef: i believe it's based on when you started up zenmodeler
[02-May-2008 19:11:25] <_chris__> it's +6 hours from that time
[02-May-2008 19:11:28] <_chris__> we don't run it out of cron
[02-May-2008 19:11:59] how can I increase that to 24 hours?
[02-May-2008 19:12:10] do I need to change the cycletime in the config?
[02-May-2008 19:12:46] so I'm looking at the daemons tab under /About/zenossInfo
[02-May-2008 19:13:07] there's an edit config option, but it's blank, and I'm not sure what goes there
[02-May-2008 19:16:21] any thoughts?
[02-May-2008 19:21:39] also...trying to restart zenmodeler via the webpage does not actually restart the process
[02-May-2008 19:22:30] <_chris__> set cycletime in your ${ZENHOME}/etc/zenmodeler.conf
[02-May-2008 19:22:44] <_chris__> it's in minutes so set it to be 24 * 60
[02-May-2008 19:23:53] ok...currently that file is empty
[02-May-2008 19:24:11] <_chris__> yes - so it's using the default, which is 6 hours
[02-May-2008 19:24:58] so I just put in: --cycletime=1440
[02-May-2008 19:25:03] <_chris__> no
[02-May-2008 19:25:04] <_chris__> put in
[02-May-2008 19:25:06] <_chris__> cycletime 1440
[02-May-2008 19:25:14] gotcha
[02-May-2008 19:25:24] that's the same file that gets changed if you did the edit config from the gui, magnachef
[02-May-2008 19:26:12] cool...thanks
[02-May-2008 19:54:16] what's the default number of devices zenmodeler collects in paralell?
[02-May-2008 20:11:29] has anyone experienced serious lag or timeout when clicking on a device's "Edit" tab?
[02-May-2008 20:11:43] all the other tabs work fine (OS, Hardware, etc)
[02-May-2008 22:00:14] _chris__: ping, are you there?
[02-May-2008 22:00:28] <_chris__> ya
[02-May-2008 22:00:31] <_chris__> i'm heading out though
[02-May-2008 22:00:59] no prob, I'll catch you another time. enjoy your weekend.

[05-May-2008 16:30:06] Can anyone explain how dependencies work in Zenoss?
[05-May-2008 17:16:28] ok.... I am writing some scripts to retrieve devices useful information using wget.... the question is.... where can I check wich methods exist for device d ?? say d.id, d.manageIp, d.x what else ?
[05-May-2008 17:30:33] * magnachef has been looking for some docs on existing methods as well
[05-May-2008 17:45:05] hows it goin chef
[05-May-2008 17:46:26] not too shabby...you?
[05-May-2008 17:46:48] ah... taking this week off my zenoss development to compare it to some relatively inexpensive solutions
[05-May-2008 17:47:01] opmanager, whatsup, orion, etc.
[05-May-2008 17:47:29] nice
[05-May-2008 17:47:42] always a good time
[05-May-2008 17:47:55] I'm not seeing Zenoss put a good fight so far, the only area its winning in is price.
[05-May-2008 17:48:07] but if you factor in labor then it loses that one too :|
[05-May-2008 17:49:17] ahhh...It seems to be doing pretty well in my environment so far
[05-May-2008 17:49:38] My only miffs, really, are the lack of a clear setup of dependencies
[05-May-2008 17:49:54] If there were some more indepth documentation, and best practices, etc, then I'd be all set
[05-May-2008 17:49:55] and that the canned reports are too broad, and not enough of them
[05-May-2008 17:51:18] yeah, I'm talking with Zenoss sales guys today to see what I get with the Enterprise edition over the Free version
[05-May-2008 17:52:09] Seems overpriced to me, honestly.
[05-May-2008 17:57:21] I guess I'll find out :-)
[05-May-2008 17:57:43] well, if you look at products like Netcool, etc, it's decent in price
[05-May-2008 18:00:28] I do like the fact that it's an open framework
[05-May-2008 18:01:27] yes, i do appreciate that for sure
[05-May-2008 18:03:54] <_chris_> twm1010: what's unclear about the dependencies?
[05-May-2008 18:04:04] <_chris_> the fact that we have them?
[05-May-2008 18:04:07] well. how do you set them up?
[05-May-2008 18:04:20] I don't undestand the relationships, and how they interact with alerting.
[05-May-2008 18:04:23] <_chris_> are you talking about the package dependencies that zenoss has?
[05-May-2008 18:04:31] no, logical ones between the devices
[05-May-2008 18:04:32] <_chris_> the rpm deps?
[05-May-2008 18:04:37] <_chris_> oh ok
[05-May-2008 18:04:40] say i got 5 servers behind a router at a remote site...
[05-May-2008 18:04:47] router goes down, i get 6 notifications when i only need one
[05-May-2008 18:04:49] <_chris_> right
[05-May-2008 18:04:58] <_chris_> that shouldn't happen if the route tables are known
[05-May-2008 18:05:09] <_chris_> check the OS tab for the router and see if the networks are known
[05-May-2008 18:05:47] So it's supposed to be automatic, for the layer 3?
[05-May-2008 18:06:07] <_chris_> yes - for layer 3 i believe it's automatic
[05-May-2008 18:08:17] i guess i've never seen it do that
[05-May-2008 18:08:35] i definitely know that my OS tabs for the routers are well filled out.
[05-May-2008 20:23:11] cgibbons_ is now known as cgibbons

[06-May-2008 12:19:41] what does this means: threshold of zenperfsnmp cycle time exceeded? and how do I adjust it?
[06-May-2008 12:21:47] zenops: this means it took to much time to complete the cycle. please go and read the documentation, and stop asking the same question multiple times
[06-May-2008 12:42:27] MrTux: I've pointed out that there is excellent documentation several times to zenops
[06-May-2008 12:44:08] Bulwinkle: well, i won't call it excellent, but for his problems its sufficient..
[06-May-2008 12:44:19] Why do people come into this channel and because they know something they get to tell off others...this a comunities, and you are not forced to answer...if you do not like the question...step aside please..I am trying to get my job done...do not get in the way of someone trying to learn.......
[06-May-2008 12:45:01] This channels are an excellent learning tool...
[06-May-2008 12:45:03] zenops: well, a community has some rules, and in it communities the first rule is RTFM, read the fucking manual...
[06-May-2008 12:45:09] do not spoil it for others..

[06-May-2008 12:51:51] I have a question
[06-May-2008 15:28:51] i'm getting this error when trying to start zenoss, "3: Can't open /home/zenoss/.profile"
[06-May-2008 15:29:43] i have never run into this before and i don't normally admin this machine but symlinking it to a .bashrc doesn't help because then i get other errors
[06-May-2008 15:30:03] like, "13: shopt: not found"
[06-May-2008 15:30:12] and "/etc/bash_completion: 44: Syntax error: Bad substitution"
[06-May-2008 15:30:51] search results from google for these are not returning as i'd hoped
[06-May-2008 15:30:57] has anyone seen this before?

[06-May-2008 16:14:25] anybody have a clue why the java process spawed by zenjmx is such a pig? It sucks up a whole core for long periods of time.
[06-May-2008 16:14:39] it's java :)
[06-May-2008 16:14:48] how much core is it taking on your system?
[06-May-2008 16:14:52] 100%
[06-May-2008 16:15:09] seemingly at every poll interval.
[06-May-2008 16:15:17] for much longer than I would think is needed.
[06-May-2008 16:15:33] single CPU system, or?
[06-May-2008 16:15:42] dual cpus. It's taking one of them.
[06-May-2008 16:16:08] lemme ask the guy that wrote it if it does multiple threads, sorta sounds like it doesn't
[06-May-2008 16:16:08] It has the look of a process that's spinning when it shouldn't be
[06-May-2008 16:16:34] thx

[06-May-2008 16:18:40] <_chris_> jberry: you are welcome to submit your bug reports to http://dev.zenoss.org/trac/
[06-May-2008 16:18:48] Title: Zenoss - Trac (at dev.zenoss.org)
[06-May-2008 16:19:15] _chris_: thanks. Yes, I should do that. And have, at times.
[06-May-2008 16:19:27] _chris_: you beat me to it
[06-May-2008 16:19:55] <_chris_> jberry: it's remarkable how much more effective it is when you submit bug reports rather than make generic statements on irc like "fix the other bugs in zenjmx while he's at it."
[06-May-2008 16:20:28] _chris_ gets testy when people point out that his baby has warts :p
[06-May-2008 16:20:37] _chris_: yes, understood. On the other hand it's also frustrating when ongong threads in forum get no zenoss input on issue such as zenjmx.
[06-May-2008 16:21:26] <_chris_> jberry: paying customers also get frustrated when developers spend time supporting non-paying customers. ;-)
[06-May-2008 16:22:23] Well, hopefully making it so that zenjmx can actually work in an authenticated fashion, as advertised, is good for both parties. http://community.zenoss.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5401
[06-May-2008 16:22:32] Title: Forums :: View topic - ZenJMX with Authentication enabled. (at community.zenoss.com)
[06-May-2008 16:25:56] huh. I don't see any links to the trac site from the main zenoss pages. So that's encouraging people to file bugs? Or to hide bugs?
[06-May-2008 16:26:05] jberry: We're currently working on pushing out a new beta with improved installers
[06-May-2008 16:26:21] <_chris_> jberry: if you are interested in seeing this problem resolved you could: a.) become a paying customer, b.) modify the source code yourself and submit a patch. until then this problem will have to compete against the other 584 open tickets.
[06-May-2008 16:26:21] check and see if they fix your bug
[06-May-2008 16:26:52] the 'Code' link on the zenoss page has a link that then takes you to trac, jberry
[06-May-2008 16:29:30] cgibbons: thanks. I bug suggest a link for "bug reports" or "issue tracking". I use track, so I might have been able to figure out (though it wasn't obvious to me) that to file a bug report I'd click on a "code" link.
[06-May-2008 16:29:40] trac, that is ;)
[06-May-2008 16:31:16] yeah
[06-May-2008 16:32:42] cgibbons: it's not apparent how I file a bug. What login do I need to use?
[06-May-2008 16:32:44] jberry: out of curiosity, what kind of jmx monitoring are you doing? I'm just curious
[06-May-2008 16:33:22] mray: monitoring a single java web server, pulling out about 5 different jmx parameters such as thead count, memory usage, etc.
[06-May-2008 16:33:52] mray: and for that, the java process on the zen machine consumes about 2 minutes every five minutes at 100% cpu ;)
[06-May-2008 16:34:05] jberry: looks like we require you to login to create a ticket
[06-May-2008 16:34:14] huh that certainly does seem excessive
[06-May-2008 16:34:23] mray: and how do I login?
[06-May-2008 16:34:25] I'll ask IT why we don't allow anonymous creation of tickets
[06-May-2008 16:34:32] <_chris_> we were getting spammed by our trac server
[06-May-2008 16:34:44] <_chris_> that's why we don't allow anon creation of tickets
[06-May-2008 16:35:15] the new trac .11 which is due (any month now) is supposed to have better anti-spam controls.
[06-May-2008 16:36:16] _chris_: so that answers your earlier question about why I might make statements like that, rather than filing bugs... ;) Because I can't!
[06-May-2008 16:36:59] But making it hard to file bugs can be an efficient way to cut down bug counts ;)
[06-May-2008 16:37:14] <_chris_> jberry: you can use the zenoss account to create tickets. the password is zenoss.
[06-May-2008 16:37:15] I can assure you that's unintentional :)
[06-May-2008 16:37:27] _chris_: thanks
[06-May-2008 16:37:44] _chris_: should we put that up on the trac page somewhere?
[06-May-2008 16:37:52] or will that just encourage spammers?
[06-May-2008 16:38:43] I am getting this errors "threshold of Utilization 75 perc exceeded: current value 716.72" I increased the values to 90 and I am still getting the same errors..what gives?
[06-May-2008 16:40:05] I am also getting this one on my LOCALHOST but I have no clue: threshold of zenperfsnmp cycle time exceeded: current value 394.07
[06-May-2008 16:40:14] please advice and thank you
[06-May-2008 16:41:19] that's kinda neat
[06-May-2008 16:44:47] When I changed the threshold from 75 to 90, now I get an page error on the performance tab... Module Python expression "here.speed / 8 * .90", line 1, in
[06-May-2008 16:45:30] _chris_: Hmm. I just spent 5 minutes typing up a bug report after logging in as the zenoss user as suggested. But on submit of the ticket I got the error message "TICKET CREATE PRIVILEGES NEEDED" (or something like that).
[06-May-2008 16:47:26] jberry: Seriously? Send me the text and I'll enter it for you. I'm working on a ticket for IT to put those credentials on the page right now
[06-May-2008 16:47:34] jberry: mray@zenoss.com
[06-May-2008 16:48:05] if the credentials won't let you create a ticket, I'll get that fixed too
[06-May-2008 16:48:56] mray: on an additional try it does seem to let me create a ticket. I got the error when I hit "preview" before hitting submit ticket. I'll try one more time.
[06-May-2008 16:52:22] Was that 3114?
[06-May-2008 16:52:42] (that was probably the second test I did after the first failed).
[06-May-2008 16:52:50] I just submitted a true but as #3115.
[06-May-2008 16:52:59] "true bug"
[06-May-2008 16:53:31] cool, thanks
[06-May-2008 16:57:01] Can some help me with my questions please..
[06-May-2008 17:04:07] mray: filed #3116 about the zenjmx load issue. It's a bit skimpy, as I don't have any good diagnostic information for it, unfortunately.
[06-May-2008 17:05:36] zenops: You might want to post that to the forums to get a little more visibility. IRC is somewhat asynchronous and development is slammed right now.
[06-May-2008 17:13:54] mray thanks, I did I am waiting for responses..
[06-May-2008 17:15:33] but perhaps you could tell me this: why is it that lots of devices change the status of SNMP up to SNMP DOWN and back and forth..I am trying to find the cause, it does this for hours..
[06-May-2008 17:17:20] mray: one other infrastructure issue that's annoying...
[06-May-2008 17:18:03] I'm subscribed to the forum, but not to a mailing list. When I post to the forum, I get bounces back from various mailing lists, saying that my message has been rejected.
[06-May-2008 17:18:40] The forum is posting to a mailing list which rejects my message because I'm not a mailing list subscriber. Not what I'd expect.

[08-May-2008 11:28:53] the admin guide is very thin on details, lists only Manager, Zenuser
[08-May-2008 11:29:21] i would like to know the purpose / limitations of the other types of users, zenmanager etc
[08-May-2008 11:34:17] How do I disable snmp alltogehter for devices without it?
[08-May-2008 11:34:25] It pings my linksys ok, but I get an event:
[08-May-2008 11:34:41] snmp agent down on device core01
[08-May-2008 11:34:44] have a look at the zProperties for that class
[08-May-2008 11:34:55] zPingIgnore : True/False
[08-May-2008 11:35:01] something along those lines
[08-May-2008 11:35:26] if you want it for all devices , consider setting it on the /devices class
[08-May-2008 11:35:55] Ok, I'm starting to get the concept
[08-May-2008 11:36:12] Does ZenOSS also have something like an agent to run on clients?
[08-May-2008 11:36:20] that would be zSnmpIgnore btw
[08-May-2008 11:36:22] or similar
[08-May-2008 11:36:34] i have trouble remember all the variable names
[08-May-2008 11:38:22] It can do checks throug SSH?
[08-May-2008 11:38:36] zCommand i think
[08-May-2008 11:38:37] yes
[08-May-2008 11:38:43] Nice...

[08-May-2008 12:27:51] Why it always need as Device Name at first the IP ADRESS ? and why it always try to use SNMP ?
[08-May-2008 12:28:26] Our Server doesn't have SNMP ... and i'm too stupid to find the ..
[08-May-2008 12:36:45] ok ..

[08-May-2008 13:34:05] Does anyone know a way to associate a network subnet with a location in zenoss? That way whenever a new device is discovered in that subnet it is automatically associated with a particular location?

[08-May-2008 23:46:35] can't... seem to figure out how to get zenoss to NOT monitor an ip address, once the service had been added to the host
[08-May-2008 23:46:47] wants to monitor all teh ips it found via snmp, but id on't want it to monitor all three

I would be so glad if someone could help me .. Please Guys.
[09-May-2008 14:43:47] myrick: in the collector plugins what do you have regarding iproute ? if it's the snmp plugins then that's the point
[09-May-2008 14:44:09] myrick: maybe you should use instad the cmd plugins for collecting iproutes
[09-May-2008 14:44:09] xinity .. wait erm
[09-May-2008 14:44:57] in collector plugins i have: smnp.newdevicemap and snmp.devicemap and snmp.interfacemap and snmp.routemap ...
[09-May-2008 14:45:40] so i have to delete this snmp. plugins and add the cmd. plugins xinity =) ?

[09-May-2008 14:49:14] myrick: but hey , to uses these plugins, your zenoss server should be able to make an ssh connection to your host with the zenoss login :-)
[09-May-2008 14:49:26] Yeah .. but I'm really new in Zenoss and are in an apprenticeship so ..
[09-May-2008 14:49:33] xinity .. really nice .. thank you

[09-May-2008 22:40:38] zenoss has automaticly detected a host on my network and now is monitoring services on it from multiple ips
[09-May-2008 22:40:41] problem is
[09-May-2008 22:40:47] i don't want it to monitor one of those services on all the ips
[09-May-2008 22:41:01] how do i remove an ip from the service for that host

[11-May-2008 13:43:42] hi, I just installed zenos on RHEL5, but I had set a root pw for mysql before I did so. How can initialize the mysql db for zenoss and also tell zenoss which mysql pw/uid to use?
[11-May-2008 19:00:49] hi everybody. I want to get a MIB table from a SNMP agent and show it in zenoss. How can I do this????
[11-May-2008 19:02:08] masaghi: what do you mean with getting a mibtable from an agent? you can get values, mibtables will be delivered by the agent's manufacturer
[11-May-2008 19:06:41] MrTux:I mean how can I get an SNMP table's values from an agent using SNMP data collector and show it in zenoss in device OS tab.
[11-May-2008 19:08:44] masaghi: you need to write an own mapper for it, or if you have performance data you need to create a data template
[11-May-2008 19:10:02] MrTux: Would you please tell me in brief with step by strep instructions?
[11-May-2008 19:10:14] masaghi: for solution a or b?
[11-May-2008 19:10:33] MrTux: both of them
[11-May-2008 19:11:09] MrTux:I don't know the start point and the steps.
[11-May-2008 19:11:57] masaghi: it's not that easy
[11-May-2008 19:12:03] masaghi: modeling have a look to http://www.zenoss.com/community/wiki/tips-and-tricks/3ComDeviceModel/
[11-May-2008 19:12:18] masaghi: for performance template have a look to the guide

[11-May-2008 19:13:19] I 've seen this
[11-May-2008 19:13:49] i know the docs aren't that well, but i have had not yet time for writing additional docs...
[11-May-2008 19:14:09] I searched about 2 weeks
[11-May-2008 19:14:28] but I couldn't find something useful
[11-May-2008 19:14:28] and i'm not really happy about supporting zenoss in that way general, since their sales dep is a little bit crazy about prices
[11-May-2008 19:15:38] Could you please explain the solution by following InterfaceMap!
[11-May-2008 19:16:03] well, have a look to the examples, i cannot provide you more
[11-May-2008 19:16:35] ok
[11-May-2008 19:16:40] which examples?
[11-May-2008 19:17:19] InterfaceMap.py
[11-May-2008 19:18:19] Is it straight forward? I 've seen this file too and it's more different than 3Com Model!
[11-May-2008 19:19:05] well, you can see the concepts in there, everything else is on your own
[11-May-2008 19:19:24] Thanks a lot MrTux

[11-May-2008 19:21:06] may i ask for what you're working on?
[11-May-2008 19:22:06] I'm using zenoss to manage a network
[11-May-2008 19:22:24] do you have a special vendor on your screen?
[11-May-2008 19:22:49] and I want to use it to get some additional info from snmp agents that have been extended
[11-May-2008 19:22:54] No
[11-May-2008 19:23:00] we have no vendor
[11-May-2008 19:23:06] ok ;)
[11-May-2008 19:23:22] i'm working on foundry devices gettin into zenoss
[11-May-2008 19:23:31] we use LTSP with thin clients with embedded os
[11-May-2008 19:23:42] That's great
[11-May-2008 19:24:23] but i think i'll license the pack to disallow the use with the enterprise editions..
[11-May-2008 19:24:57] why?
[11-May-2008 19:26:05] they wanted 60k$ for 1000 devices, and that is somehow the same price for openview, and for this sum there is now enough backflow to the opensource community
[11-May-2008 19:26:42] yeah, you right
[11-May-2008 19:28:43] and that is the sum for one year, so i cannot really think they now what they do
[11-May-2008 19:29:00] as i told them my opinion, they got rude, so i'm sorry
[11-May-2008 19:29:36] i will not support these guys, but helping people on the same way like my way
[11-May-2008 19:30:06] I think open source should be helpful for all people
[11-May-2008 19:30:40] especially for whom they believe freedom of software use and creation
[11-May-2008 19:30:56] not in the commercial ways!
[11-May-2008 19:31:18] i've no problem to pay for special features, i wanted only the enterprise packs.. and they told me this is not possible
[11-May-2008 19:31:29] so i will not made it possible to them to use my work
[11-May-2008 19:31:52] you are right
[11-May-2008 19:32:31] you make your effort and this is your right to get money for that.
[11-May-2008 19:34:49] MrTux: I'm so glad to meet you. Sure I will contact you. Bye for now.
[11-May-2008 19:34:59] bye
[11-May-2008 19:36:06] MrTux: you can't licence the pack
[11-May-2008 19:36:36] xinity: i know. i need to license a bunch of things i do not want..
[11-May-2008 19:36:42] MrTux: as you use the opensource version on Zenoss, you must deliver your packs according to the GPL licence
[11-May-2008 19:37:18] xinity: well, why? i use only interfaces, it's not a derivative of zenoss, i can choose any license i want..
[11-May-2008 19:38:08] MrTux: it's not a fork right, but it's build on zenoss right ?
[11-May-2008 19:39:31] well, it's an addon, using interfaces.. i do not deliver any sources from zenoss, so... many products build on linux but arent opensource or gpl
[11-May-2008 19:41:24] MrTux: this way , that's right
[11-May-2008 19:41:28] the enterprisepacks are also not gpl and are based on zenoss..
[11-May-2008 19:41:39] so why shouldn't i go the same way?
[11-May-2008 19:41:54] MrTux: well, your choice
[11-May-2008 19:45:23] xinity: what is your solution? why it is not easy???

[12-May-2008 12:36:08] I'm hacking on an SnmpPlugin for the DataCollector
[12-May-2008 12:36:53] does anyone know if there's a quick way to test it, other than deleting/adding a device?
[12-May-2008 12:37:23] running the modeler
[12-May-2008 12:37:44] "Manage -> Model Device" doesn't seem to do anything with my new plugin
[12-May-2008 12:38:26] kop_: run the modeler command line, rather than the gui interface
[12-May-2008 12:39:48] aah I see
[12-May-2008 12:40:03] great :)
[12-May-2008 12:40:40] kop_: ;)
[12-May-2008 12:53:16] hmm strange, the HPDeviceMap obviously HAS run at some point, but now it doesn't
[12-May-2008 12:56:55] its condition() returns device.snmpOid.startswith('.1.3.6.1.4.1.232') but now that turns out as false
[12-May-2008 12:57:50] snmpOid is '.1.3.6.1.4.1.311', which is where Microsoft starts
[12-May-2008 12:59:57] I can't get my head around how the HP properties were once set. *Why* and *when* did device.snmpOid equal .1.3.6.1.4.1.232 ?
[12-May-2008 13:04:24] kop_: have you taken a look at hp snmp mibs ?
[12-May-2008 15:05:48] has anyone run into an issue where they are trying to create a user who needs to use the event list and move devices to history, but not have full admin rights?
[12-May-2008 15:18:43] I essentially need a NOC user where they can deal with events and manage the event list, but I don't want them to have access to user settings, etc
[12-May-2008 15:40:15] magnachef, yes ... same issue here ... ask about the zen operator role zen pack ... 2.2 release may 21 .. may just be enterprise which we are ...
[12-May-2008 15:46:42] that's a bit dissapointing
[12-May-2008 15:46:55] so the Zen pack doesn't come out until may 21?
[12-May-2008 15:51:18] I'm looking at http://localhost:8080/zport/manage_access
[12-May-2008 15:51:27] seems like new roles can be defined within there
[12-May-2008 15:56:08] ...now to figure out what permissions to give to this "operator" role
[12-May-2008 16:01:30] can someone please give me some pointers for setting up this Operator status within manage_access screen?
[12-May-2008 19:49:54] Hello All, Can anyone tell me how to take complete backup of the Zenoss
[12-May-2008 20:01:28] Settings->Backup

[12-May-2008 20:03:27] ok thank you
[12-May-2008 20:03:38] i will go throught the admin guide
[12-May-2008 20:12:10] Hello
[12-May-2008 20:13:29] Could anyone please tell me if there already exists some Zenoss 2.1 release that works with Python 2.5 and / or if Zenoss 2.2 will do it?
[12-May-2008 20:14:24] bitshuffler_: Sorry no.
[12-May-2008 20:14:42] We're hamstrung on an older version of Zope that doesn't run on 2.5
[12-May-2008 20:14:54] mrayzenoss: as in you don't know or as in zenoss 2.2 wont work with python 2.5?
[12-May-2008 20:15:23] Zenoss 2.2 won't work with Python 2.5 because our version of Zope won't run on Python 2.5
[12-May-2008 20:15:38] so use a newer version of zope ;)
[12-May-2008 20:16:05] MrTux: We've tried, it's hard
[12-May-2008 20:16:21] we're pretty tightly stuck on the permissions of Zope 2.8, and 2.10 and later changed them
[12-May-2008 20:16:31] it's a big pain, we're gonna fix it
[12-May-2008 20:16:47] mrayzenoss: ah, i see. Do you have any plans to switch your zope version? My problem is that in most / all current systems 2.5 is supported and 2.4.
[12-May-2008 20:17:01] heh, you beat me to it :D
[12-May-2008 20:17:20] we do plan on it, I know it's a pain. I'm the community manager and it's blocking us off of newer distros
[12-May-2008 20:17:36] which is why we're delivering a "stack" installer for 2.2
[12-May-2008 20:17:46] which has all our dependencies wrapped up
[12-May-2008 20:18:01] Python/Zope/Zenoss
[12-May-2008 20:18:20] which is good and bad
[12-May-2008 20:18:33] which kinda defeats the purpos of shared libraries and burdens you with loads of work i might think.
[12-May-2008 20:19:02] bitshuffler_: A bit, but it also negates the need to go crazy supporting 20 different linuxes
[12-May-2008 20:19:20] like I said, good and bad. We know which Python/Zope are there
[12-May-2008 20:19:34] but it keeps us blocked out of proper integration into Linux distributions
[12-May-2008 20:19:37] which is a goal of mine
[12-May-2008 20:19:50] mrayzenoss: have you had a look at the suse build service - makes it pretty easy to distribute rpms for many distros via repositories & included mirror infrastructure?
[12-May-2008 20:20:01] bitshuffler_: yup, I'm on it
[12-May-2008 20:20:05] it's in my todo
[12-May-2008 20:20:12] I've got a lot of todos :)
[12-May-2008 20:20:44] stack install for 2.2, then a DMG for OSX and a Solaris build, then revisit getting Zope upgraded
[12-May-2008 20:20:58] can you make a rough _unofficial_ guess when this will work - like xmas, 2 years on zenoss 6.2 ;) ?
[12-May-2008 20:21:06] well, I've been here 5 weeks
[12-May-2008 20:21:19] oh :)
[12-May-2008 20:21:30] we're talking about 2.3 now, I'm pushing for the Zope upgrade
[12-May-2008 20:21:38] which will be the Python upgrade as well
[12-May-2008 20:22:08] 2.3 is scheduled for fall I believe
[12-May-2008 20:22:40] be back later, gotta go to a meeting
[12-May-2008 20:22:47] fall sounds very good - i just recently discovered zenoss but with only 2.4 it's a no go here sadly.

[13-May-2008 15:56:22] thats my advice, and google is your friend

[13-May-2008 15:57:53] well i told you whats going on :P advice is free
[13-May-2008 15:59:03] is the shh method a "collector plugin?"
[13-May-2008 15:59:11] no
[13-May-2008 16:02:42] ok, i understand what you mean by collector plug in. the device class is using all the available snmp collector plug ins available with core.
[13-May-2008 16:05:17] incl the one thats called HRSWinstalled ( or similar ) ?
[13-May-2008 16:05:21] that being said, none of the names on the zenoss.snmp collector plugins seem to get processes, there is a zenoss.cmd.linux.process that would lead me to believe that could do it, but that with SSH?
[13-May-2008 16:05:58] there is HRWSInstalledMap
[13-May-2008 16:07:02] that apears to list installed SW, which is cool, but not what processes are running
[13-May-2008 16:09:14] ok going home

[15-May-2008 21:31:47] sorry
[15-May-2008 21:31:56] are you still there mrayzenoss
[15-May-2008 21:32:13] I am having a weird issue with zenoss in vmware
[15-May-2008 21:34:16] ok, ill just say my issue, and ill stay in the room
[15-May-2008 21:35:42] I have had zenoss installed to vmware for a while now
[15-May-2008 21:35:45] works perfect
[15-May-2008 21:35:58] using hamachi as my vpn
[15-May-2008 21:36:23] worked great
[15-May-2008 21:36:44] but all of a sudden it stopped collecting snmp data from my 5 servers
[15-May-2008 21:37:20] thru the linux command I can not ping the hamachi IPs, but when I load the zenoss website it says it is connected and the servers are ready
[15-May-2008 21:37:26] so it sees them somehow
[15-May-2008 21:37:31] JVirus: can you run snmpwalk on those servers from within zenoss?
[15-May-2008 21:37:37] it fails
[15-May-2008 21:38:39] sounds like the real issue is that it is not showing the devices as down, since it cant snmpwalk OR ping
[15-May-2008 21:38:52] wow, hold on a sec
[15-May-2008 21:39:36] its weird
[15-May-2008 21:39:44] some of my servers are working for snmp walk
[15-May-2008 21:39:47] others are not
[15-May-2008 21:39:52] but none collect data
[15-May-2008 21:40:25] I am checking my sonicwall logs and I am seeing a bunch of UDP packet drops
[15-May-2008 21:41:56] I assume zenperfsnmp is running...
[15-May-2008 21:44:02] Just added a new Mib to Zenoss and created a new Template. Under perf the graph that I created is listed however all it says is Missing RRD File. Where can I find instructions on creating graphs from new MIBS?
[15-May-2008 21:45:36] zenperfsnmp?
[15-May-2008 21:45:57] sorry, I am new to networking beyond routing my internet :P
[15-May-2008 21:46:37] on my servers?
[15-May-2008 21:46:43] to relay the snmp info ?
[15-May-2008 21:48:37] to pull the snmp info into the graph.
[15-May-2008 21:48:45] I use SNMP Informant on my windows servers
[15-May-2008 21:48:55] oh, does that run with zenoss?
[15-May-2008 21:49:10] I JUST INSTALLED WHATEVER WAS DEFAULT WITH THE VMWARE DOWNLOAD
[15-May-2008 21:49:15] oops, sorry, caps
[15-May-2008 21:52:23] so basically once you import the mib you need to set up a new template with data sources and graphs and then bind it to your device
[15-May-2008 21:52:46] there is a document somewhere on the zenoss site
[15-May-2008 21:54:00] JVirus: under settings under daemons check to make sure everything is running
[15-May-2008 21:54:04] yeah just need a new template which I setup, however must have missed something.

[15-May-2008 22:09:30] ok
[15-May-2008 22:09:32] I started them
[15-May-2008 22:09:39] is there a good way to test them
[15-May-2008 22:10:16] if they are down it should show up with the zenoss issues portlet
[15-May-2008 22:10:35] or do you mean against a single device?
[15-May-2008 22:10:47] I just mean to test zenoss collecting the data
[15-May-2008 22:10:59] they servers have never shown being doen
[15-May-2008 22:11:02] down
[15-May-2008 22:11:10] yeah the zenping needs to be running
[15-May-2008 22:11:14] the graphs were just empty
[15-May-2008 22:11:36] ok
[15-May-2008 22:11:49] you can test zenperfsnmp from the command line, I assume ssh is set up on the vmware image
[15-May-2008 22:11:54] now 3 of my servers got a error report
[15-May-2008 22:12:04] so zenping is now running
[15-May-2008 22:12:13] says my server is down
[15-May-2008 22:12:13] and since it cannot ping the devices it is generating an error
[15-May-2008 22:12:23] but 2 are "working"
[15-May-2008 22:12:31] but I dont know how long to wait to get data
[15-May-2008 22:13:05] what is zenperfsnmp
[15-May-2008 22:13:16] from the command line on the zenoss box run "zenperfsnmp -d -v 10
[15-May-2008 22:13:19] "
[15-May-2008 22:13:31] = ip correct?
[15-May-2008 22:13:34] yup
[15-May-2008 22:13:39] with the " "
[15-May-2008 22:13:43] no ""
[15-May-2008 22:13:48] didnt think so
[15-May-2008 22:13:58] the -v 10 should show some useful data
[15-May-2008 22:14:42] command not found
[15-May-2008 22:15:10] ah, you need to run "su zenoss" first
[15-May-2008 22:15:42] permission denied
[15-May-2008 22:15:49] hmm
[15-May-2008 22:15:57] I did "su zenoss run"
[15-May-2008 22:16:07] oh just su zenoss
[15-May-2008 22:16:24] bash-3.00$
[15-May-2008 22:16:39] so now you are the zenoss user, run zenperfsnmp -d -v 10
[15-May-2008 22:16:54] err zenperfsnmp run -d -v 10
[15-May-2008 22:17:18] command not found
[15-May-2008 22:17:42] gmm
[15-May-2008 22:17:45] *hmm
[15-May-2008 22:17:45] ?
[15-May-2008 22:17:48] oh
[15-May-2008 22:17:48] lol
[15-May-2008 22:19:11] im going to call sonicwall support too just in case, but I will be on hold for 45 min before they talk to me
[15-May-2008 22:19:30] since I see those dropped packets for UDP
[15-May-2008 22:21:50] makes sense
[15-May-2008 22:22:26] I wish it did to me
[15-May-2008 22:22:26] :P
[15-May-2008 22:22:56] All I know is when I set up snmp I had to make it udp or something
[15-May-2008 22:23:01] so I figure that is an issue
[15-May-2008 22:23:03] lol
[15-May-2008 22:31:47] its just weird how hamachi is all set up, running, everythings online and zenoss said that half are down
[15-May-2008 22:34:15] well you said you could not ping from the zenoss box, right?
[15-May-2008 22:35:39] they wouldnt no
[15-May-2008 22:36:36] well see
[15-May-2008 22:36:39] thats what is weird
[15-May-2008 22:36:46] now I can ping half of them
[15-May-2008 22:36:56] but those half still dont receive the snmp data
[15-May-2008 22:37:22] are they behind the firewall?
[15-May-2008 22:37:28] yeah
[15-May-2008 22:37:37] all servers are the same
[15-May-2008 22:37:44] and my network here is behind a sonicwall
[15-May-2008 22:37:56] but I havnt had issues untill just recently
[15-May-2008 22:38:14] and the sonicwall is new, I am thinking that is it now. But not totally sure on how its acting
[15-May-2008 22:38:51] yeah, if you cant ping some servers then I would check the firewall
[15-May-2008 22:39:55] yeah
[15-May-2008 22:40:04] but you would think all servers would have the same issue
[15-May-2008 22:40:24] its the same commands being ran
[15-May-2008 22:41:33] you would think....
[15-May-2008 22:44:52] does an snmp walk do something different than the command that gathers the snmp info for the graphs
[15-May-2008 22:44:55] ?
[15-May-2008 22:54:48] well snmpwalk just grabs a small portion of the info
[15-May-2008 22:55:13] snmpperfmon grabs everything every 5 minutes and stores the important info as performance data
[15-May-2008 23:04:02] and snmpperfmon was not working on my linix distr
[15-May-2008 23:04:04] distro
[15-May-2008 23:04:19] kinda scarry
[15-May-2008 23:04:42] but I am the only one with access to this box so, I know there were no changes to that
[15-May-2008 23:05:27] still on hold waiting for sonicwall support
[15-May-2008 23:05:31] bleh
[15-May-2008 23:06:02] oh no it was zenperfsnmp that was a bad command
[15-May-2008 23:06:23] I dunno, I just want to quit my job :P
[15-May-2008 23:08:32] The nice thing is that it is thru vmware, so I can just copy the vmware files to a machine off my network and see if it runs ok
[15-May-2008 23:48:53] can I force zenoss to grab snmp data instead of sitting around for 5 minutes

[16-May-2008 14:32:01] I'm wondering if I can get my hands on your updated Net-App zenpack?
[16-May-2008 14:32:10] its on the website
[16-May-2008 14:32:21] version 1.0?
[16-May-2008 14:33:14] ahhh...NetApp Volume
[16-May-2008 14:34:25] thanks...has anyone been able to get the perf graph working for the regular NetApp zenpack
[16-May-2008 14:48:22] hola folks
[16-May-2008 14:48:38] is there any issues that I now have two /Devices/Storage/NetApp classes?
[16-May-2008 14:48:58] quick question for devs, I have my WMI connection working, how do I define templates using WMI as a data source?
[16-May-2008 14:52:19] malbon: you have to create a command data source and run the wmi tool, take a look at the existing wmi zenpacks for a good way to do it
[16-May-2008 14:54:06] pat2man: thanks, I want to avoid using commands wherever possible.
[16-May-2008 14:55:02] well its just the wmi command, you need to tell it the server and username, etc. the wmi zenpacks do it quite well
[16-May-2008 14:55:51] so what does zenwin do?
[16-May-2008 14:57:28] heh, dont know exactly, something about modeling
[16-May-2008 14:58:51] magnachef: There should be one that is Netapp and one that is NetApp, no?
[16-May-2008 14:59:13] They were both captial "A"
[16-May-2008 14:59:26] but that was from having the other NetApp zenpack installed
[16-May-2008 15:00:35] one has a "Name" of NetApp, and one (yours) has a Name of FileSystem
[16-May-2008 15:02:41] pat2man: it's ok, I'll read the source. Thanks for the help.
[16-May-2008 15:03:35] magnachef: oh
[16-May-2008 15:04:30] Hi, I am using the vmare install, I have not added any zenpacks or mibs, I am getting this messages from my routers..unrouted VLAN 34 threshold of Utilization 75 perc exceeded: current value 1944.34
[16-May-2008 15:04:44] npmccallum: are you using both zenpacks, or just yours?
[16-May-2008 15:04:55] magnachef: neither at the moment :)
[16-May-2008 15:05:03] Where do I find these settings to be fixed?
[16-May-2008 15:05:06] heh
[16-May-2008 15:05:27] since is the default install, I just can't find these settigs
[16-May-2008 15:05:54] you need to go to the device class
[16-May-2008 15:06:03] then click on Templates
[16-May-2008 15:07:15] you may you then may need to create a new rule to filter out your VLAN type interfaces, or just change the threshold
[16-May-2008 15:07:31] so you would probably want to start with ethernetCsmacd
[16-May-2008 15:07:46] here.speed / 8 * .75
[16-May-2008 15:08:05] that is my setting, I would rather filter out the vlans
[16-May-2008 15:08:10] ok
[16-May-2008 15:08:23] so go to device class: /Devices/Network
[16-May-2008 15:08:37] your idea of the vlans is the right one
[16-May-2008 15:09:12] then create a new template, with the name of the interface type (as defined by zenoss) probably something like "vlan"
[16-May-2008 15:10:10] then just leave everything blank in that template (under data sources, thresholds, and graph definitions) and you should be done
[16-May-2008 15:10:32] I've done this for propVirtual interfaces
[16-May-2008 15:10:32] wow !!
[16-May-2008 15:10:39] that easy eh?
[16-May-2008 15:10:49] that's all ya gotta do!
[16-May-2008 15:11:00] awesome..let me give it a spin 11
[16-May-2008 15:11:07] good luck
[16-May-2008 15:11:16] thanks
[16-May-2008 15:11:19] don't forget to clear out those old events after setting up the template
[16-May-2008 15:11:20] np
[16-May-2008 15:11:27] sure..
[16-May-2008 15:14:25] does the template needs to bound?
[16-May-2008 15:14:51] I don't think so
[16-May-2008 15:15:07] What does bind means to the system?
[16-May-2008 15:15:23] heh, not sure
[16-May-2008 15:15:29] ok..
[16-May-2008 15:15:40] maybe someone else can chime in on that
[16-May-2008 15:16:47] npm: I'm getting a zenoss error after remodeling the device, then clicking on the perf tab
[16-May-2008 15:18:32] hmmm...only for one of my netapp devices...
[16-May-2008 15:19:58] I am also getting this: Error reading value for "unrouted VLAN 193" on some.router (oid .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.20.296 is bad)
[16-May-2008 15:20:21] where is this oid located, again this is the default install
[16-May-2008 15:20:30] I know the value it needs
[16-May-2008 15:20:39] I just do not know w
