[03-Mar-2008 13:50:09] <klinstifen> morning...anyone awake in here?
[03-Mar-2008 14:40:42] <klinstifen> anyone in here? i have a quick question about heartbeats
[03-Mar-2008 15:08:09] <Bulwinkle> klinstifen: what is your question?
[03-Mar-2008 15:15:05] <ke4qqq> klinstifen, long time no see - how is work coming on the exchange zenpack?
[03-Mar-2008 15:16:27] <klinstifen> bulwinkle: since that upgrade i did last week i am getting heartbeat errors from non existant devices.
[03-Mar-2008 15:16:47] <klinstifen> i'll get hearbeats from "zenossserver.mydomain.com.mydomain.com" and from "localhost"
[03-Mar-2008 15:16:55] <Bulwinkle> klinstifen: did you do a zenmigrate?
[03-Mar-2008 15:16:59] <klinstifen> right now my zenoss server is listed in the devices as "localhost"
[03-Mar-2008 15:17:15] <klinstifen> but the heartbeats are for the actual server name...
[03-Mar-2008 15:17:21] <klinstifen> bulwinkle: i did
[03-Mar-2008 15:17:42] <klinstifen> ke4qqq: yeah man, long time now chat. i've been popping on from time to time to see if you are here. i finished that zenpack
[03-Mar-2008 15:17:50] <klinstifen> works pretty well, looks good.
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:02] <aurax> hello anyone around ?
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:04] <klinstifen> uses wmic to connect with exchange and then greps log info
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:12] <klinstifen> i can send it your way if you want
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:12] <Bulwinkle> stop all services besides zeoctl and do a zenmigrate
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:17] <ke4qqq> yeah I try and hang out and see if you are around, and end up seeing you in history.
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:18] <aurax> i got problems with zenoss - it's not starting
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:23] <klinstifen> ke4qqq: you ever finish that apache zenpack mod?
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:41] <klinstifen> bulwinkle: trying that now
[03-Mar-2008 15:18:53] <ke4qqq> unfortunately no, got distracted by postfix (need to push that out) and postgres......
[03-Mar-2008 15:19:22] <ke4qqq> those are almost ready to be packaged I think
[03-Mar-2008 15:19:32] <ke4qqq> (they have been working pretty well for me)
[03-Mar-2008 15:19:51] <aurax> any idea how to debug it...
[03-Mar-2008 15:19:57] <ke4qqq> aurax, what does it say when you tell it to start
[03-Mar-2008 15:21:15] <aurax> nothing actually... when i restart zenoss it's say's: Daemon: zopectl daemon manager not running
[03-Mar-2008 15:21:40] <aurax> no connection to port 80
[03-Mar-2008 15:21:46] <aurax> nothing else grabs it
[03-Mar-2008 15:22:06] <aurax> can i paste freely here or pastbin ?
[03-Mar-2008 15:22:43] <klinstifen> bulwinkle: migration complete...gonna restart zenoss
[03-Mar-2008 15:23:00] <aurax> wow what happend to zenoss site ?
[03-Mar-2008 15:23:37] <klinstifen> aurax: what do you mean? zenoss.com looks like it has for several months
[03-Mar-2008 15:23:55] <aurax> it's empty of pictures here
[03-Mar-2008 15:23:57] <aurax> just text& css
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:07] <aurax> i think i've forgot to add to zenoss user .bashrc :
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:08] <aurax> export ZENHOME=/usr/local/zenoss
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:08] <aurax> export PYTHONPATH=$ZENHOME/lib/python
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:08] <aurax> export PATH=$ZENHOME/bin:$PATH
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:49] <klinstifen> bulwinkle: got a heartbeat from servername.mydomain.com.mydomain.com for zenwinmodeler
[03-Mar-2008 15:24:49] <aurax> because when i ps aux i see some using python2.4 and some procs are using python
[03-Mar-2008 15:25:04] <aurax> any idea ?
[03-Mar-2008 15:25:13] <Bulwinkle> klinstifen: *shrug*\
[03-Mar-2008 15:25:29] <klinstifen> lol
[03-Mar-2008 15:25:37] * klinstifen digs deeper

[03-Mar-2008 15:25:55] <klinstifen> sigh
[03-Mar-2008 15:27:52] <Bulwinkle> klinstifen: mine come and go....
[03-Mar-2008 15:29:06] <aurax> how can i debug those startup problems ?
[03-Mar-2008 15:30:23] <klinstifen> aurax: you could try, from console, zopectl run.
[03-Mar-2008 15:30:35] <klinstifen> that will run it in the foreground and then maybe you'll see what's going wrong
[03-Mar-2008 15:30:54] <aurax> ok
[03-Mar-2008 15:31:22] <aurax> daemon manager running; daemon process not running
[03-Mar-2008 15:32:00] <aurax> it started after i typed 'fg'
[03-Mar-2008 15:32:19] <aurax> when i use the init.d script it won't start..
[03-Mar-2008 15:33:57] <aurax> weird...
[03-Mar-2008 15:38:04] <klinstifen> what user are you when using the init.d script?
[03-Mar-2008 15:49:20] <aurax> root
[03-Mar-2008 15:50:13] <aurax> but i want zenoss to listen to port 80
[03-Mar-2008 15:50:20] <aurax> so it must have root priveleges
[03-Mar-2008 15:53:17] <aurax> or i should use apache with rewritemod engine..
[03-Mar-2008 15:55:20] <aurax> doh... i've changed zope.conf to port 80
[03-Mar-2008 15:55:29] <aurax> that why it didnt start unless i was doing it manually.
[03-Mar-2008 15:55:30] <aurax> oh well.
[03-Mar-2008 15:57:19] <klinstifen> aurax: oh yeah they're site looks messed up now
[03-Mar-2008 16:01:14] <klinstifen> anyone thing zentrap would fail if it thought my zenoss server name was something other than what it was?
[03-Mar-2008 16:07:14] <aurax> so if i want zenoss to run on port 80 i should use apache with rewrite...
[03-Mar-2008 16:11:25] <kgoedtel> that would just let you rewrite to 8080, to actually access it from port 80 you would need something like apache mod_proxy
[03-Mar-2008 16:12:59] <kgoedtel> if zope executes as non-root (zenosss user) it can't use a privileged port (< 1024)
[03-Mar-2008 16:30:37] <aurax> yep, i configured it as is from the doc's
[03-Mar-2008 18:25:53] x-spec-t is now known as Spec

[03-Mar-2008 19:38:14] <idea4gud> hi guyz help me i am new to this ZENOSS actually using for first tiem

[03-Mar-2008 19:52:33] <EvilDin> probably you don't have port open
[03-Mar-2008 19:55:42] <Brixius> Hello I have a question, I have an event that I'm trying to map, and I want to say when evt.CondSeveraty = 5 it should match, I think I can put this in the rule but when I put it in there, it shows red
[03-Mar-2008 19:56:46] <Brixius> do I need to use "==" instead of "=" When I do it changes to black. but that would seem weird because under transform I only have to use a single = to set a value.
[03-Mar-2008 19:57:20] <Brixius> oh, wait, I think I just got it, is == is a test, not an assignment?
[03-Mar-2008 19:58:23] <Brixius> can someone confirm that for me?
[03-Mar-2008 20:00:16] <idea4gud> hi can any1 elp me
[03-Mar-2008 20:00:38] <idea4gud> I am tryin to run zenoss but it says doesnt hav zeoctl or zopectl
[03-Mar-2008 20:01:58] <PerlStalker> Why would I get the error "KeyError: 'deviceStatus'" when running zentestcommand?
[03-Mar-2008 20:05:36] <EvilDin> anyone know how to get graphs working ?
[03-Mar-2008 20:17:19] <idea4gud> hi wat happnd to the room,
[03-Mar-2008 20:17:40] <idea4gud> can any1 share their knowledge with a newbie like me
[03-Mar-2008 20:18:18] <Brixius> this room is usually really quiet, kindof a shame really
[03-Mar-2008 20:19:39] <idea4gud> i am gettin this wrror wrkin on 3 days
[03-Mar-2008 20:19:43] <idea4gud> no progress
[03-Mar-2008 20:19:50] <idea4gud> i found an some links
[03-Mar-2008 20:20:08] <idea4gud> but since i am new to Linux cant really comprehend
[03-Mar-2008 20:21:52] <Brixius> I wish I could get some help myself, I'm a relitive noob too, one would think event mapping would be documented better, or there would be more tutorials on using the fields, since that's the core of zenoss.
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:09] <idea4gud> k were u able to setup prply
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:13] <idea4gud> with out any hiccups
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:28] <idea4gud> its complains tht i dont hav Zeoctl and Zopectl
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:38] <idea4gud> i am just follwin the installation guide
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:39] <Brixius> I'm using the vmware appliance
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:45] <idea4gud> k
[03-Mar-2008 20:24:53] <idea4gud> so its all done for u
[03-Mar-2008 20:25:08] <idea4gud> so wat OS r u runnin on it
[03-Mar-2008 20:25:32] <Brixius> it's alot easier to use it to figure out how to use it. You can down load vmware player(free) or server(also free) to run the image.
[03-Mar-2008 20:25:42] <idea4gud> i hav Vmware server runnin CENTOS
[03-Mar-2008 20:25:54] <idea4gud> on Centos i am tryin to setup Zenoss
[03-Mar-2008 20:26:02] <Brixius> I'm running a test image on my windows desktop, and a prod image in VMware ESX
[03-Mar-2008 20:26:38] <Brixius> ESX = Not free
[03-Mar-2008 20:33:11] <twm1010> GSX is free tho ;)
[03-Mar-2008 20:33:26] <Brixius> GSX doesn't exist anymore, it's server

[03-Mar-2008 21:09:02] <Brixius> the way it's usually done in irc, is to goto a pastebin site like pastebin.ca, paste your code that your working with there, then post a link to it in the channel

[03-Mar-2008 21:21:24] <locohost> zenoss
[03-Mar-2008 21:21:42] <locohost> im trying to integrate it with an existing mysql cmdb
[03-Mar-2008 21:22:13] <locohost> are you suggesting that i would have better luck in zope specific forum?

[03-Mar-2008 21:27:35] <locohost> yeah, im pretty good with snmp, but all this zope crap is new

[04-Mar-2008 16:19:59] <btsteve> I am trying to setup zenoss to monitor my network. I have it up and running and several servers entered into the system. It seemed to graph for a few hours and now it has stopped graphing the ethernet ports on my boxes. Can anyone tell me where to look to start solving this issue? Thanks
[04-Mar-2008 16:21:25] <locohost> verify that you can manually snmpwalk that data
[04-Mar-2008 16:21:58] <locohost> im kinda new to zenoss myself, but you could look through /opt/zenoss/log/ for stuff that looks bad
[04-Mar-2008 16:22:15] <locohost> you could look in the rrd's to see if they contain data
[04-Mar-2008 16:23:03] <btsteve> ok let me try the snmp walk. So far the logs do not look like there is anything bad in them.
[04-Mar-2008 16:23:20] <locohost> sudo rrdtool dump /opt/zenoss/perf/Devices/vm01-locohost.locodomain/os/interfaces/eth0/ifInErrors_ifInErrors.rrd|grep -v NaN
[04-Mar-2008 16:23:40] <locohost> you could do something like that to look at the rrd file that makes the ifinerror graphs for device vm01-locohost.locodomain
[04-Mar-2008 16:24:16] <locohost> you probably want eth0/ifInOctets_ifInOctets.rrd
[04-Mar-2008 16:24:37] <btsteve> rddtool command not found.
[04-Mar-2008 16:27:05] <locohost> /opt/zenoss/bin/rrdtool
[04-Mar-2008 16:27:19] <locohost> probably not pathed in your bashrc
[04-Mar-2008 16:31:58] <klinstifen> morning
[04-Mar-2008 16:32:10] <klinstifen> anyone know how to resolve "not in topology" errors?
[04-Mar-2008 16:34:25] <klinstifen> i'm getting a critical one that says my zenoss server isn't in the topology and that the network topology will be ignored
[04-Mar-2008 16:34:29] <btsteve> Ok i ran the rrdtool dump and it spit back what looks like a bunch of html/xml
[04-Mar-2008 16:34:32] <klinstifen> then it says all of my devices aren't in the topology
[04-Mar-2008 16:34:51] <klinstifen> repeats every second : (
[04-Mar-2008 16:35:37] <klinstifen> err sorry twice a min
[04-Mar-2008 16:35:40] <klinstifen> but still : (
[04-Mar-2008 16:40:52] <klinstifen> btsteve: what are you trying to do?
[04-Mar-2008 16:41:32] <btsteve> Get my graphs working. I just saw in my logs the same topology error so i am trying to research it.
[04-Mar-2008 16:42:38] <klinstifen> what kind of graphs are you doing?
[04-Mar-2008 16:44:10] <locohost> btsteve: look at the lines that look like this: <!-- 2008-02-15 05:00:00 EST / 1203069600 --> <row><v> 0.0000000000e+00 </v></row>
[04-Mar-2008 16:44:27] <locohost> see if your rrd is being updated
[04-Mar-2008 16:46:57] <btsteve> No they all saw the 28 and 29 that is when i set up the system
[04-Mar-2008 16:47:17] <klinstifen> are these oid or command graphs?
[04-Mar-2008 16:47:30] <btsteve> i guess they are oid
[04-Mar-2008 16:47:38] <btsteve> i am a bit new to snmp
[04-Mar-2008 16:47:51] <locohost> none of the zenoss services stopped running since you had it working?
[04-Mar-2008 16:48:18] <btsteve> the box has been rebooted i have zenoos set to start at boot time.
[04-Mar-2008 16:48:27] <locohost> Zenoss builds an internal network-topology map for several of its functions.
[04-Mar-2008 16:48:27] <locohost> It is recommended that you first run "zendisc run --routers" so that, for one
[04-Mar-2008 16:48:27] <locohost> thing, zenping will be happy from the beginning. If you don't, you'll get thousands
[04-Mar-2008 16:48:27] <locohost> of "Network xxxx not in topology" in your logs. (Don't forget to rotate the logs
[04-Mar-2008 16:49:25] <btsteve> in the daemons section of zenoss it shows the zenhub stopped.
[04-Mar-2008 16:49:30] <klinstifen> loco: this issue just came about after going from 2.1.2 to 2.1.71

[04-Mar-2008 16:56:30] <btsteve> ok it wont stay started
[04-Mar-2008 16:56:42] <locohost> looks like zenhub has to do with the data collection and rrd's some how
[04-Mar-2008 16:57:16] <locohost> it will tell you all the pids that are running, and not touch them, does it fail for just zenhub?
[04-Mar-2008 16:57:19] <locohost> what exactly does it say?
[04-Mar-2008 16:58:05] <btsteve> shows a pid and then if you click on the daemons tab again it does not show a pid, and doing a status shows it not running

[04-Mar-2008 17:00:58] <klinstifen> btsteve: do a zenoss stop
[04-Mar-2008 17:01:11] <klinstifen> and then rm $ZENHOME/var/zenhub-1.zec
[04-Mar-2008 17:01:14] <klinstifen> then zenoss start
[04-Mar-2008 17:01:22] <klinstifen> zenhub will probably stay running after that
[04-Mar-2008 17:01:53] <locohost> do any of you know how to reference the current device id in a dtml script?
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:10] <btsteve> no
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:14] <klinstifen> are you calling the script from zenoss?
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:20] <locohost> yes
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:22] <klinstifen> yeah
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:24] <klinstifen> it's...
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:37] <locohost> it connects to a sql db pulls up cmdb data for that device
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:51] <locohost> i got it working, but im passing the argument manually, like hte device id in quotes
[04-Mar-2008 17:02:56] <klinstifen> $devname
[04-Mar-2008 17:03:10] <btsteve> ok looks like the process is running now
[04-Mar-2008 17:03:17] <klinstifen> btsteve: cool
[04-Mar-2008 17:03:37] <klinstifen> locohost: $devname should give you what you want
[04-Mar-2008 17:04:52] <locohost> ill try that in a sec, i was doing like ${device/id} and here/id and those were not working there.
[04-Mar-2008 17:05:58] <locohost> do you guys know why database administrators make bad house guests?
[04-Mar-2008 17:06:06] <btsteve> no
[04-Mar-2008 17:06:17] <locohost> because they might take a dump on your table.
[04-Mar-2008 17:06:40] <btsteve> lol
[04-Mar-2008 17:07:10] <klinstifen> *shakes head
[04-Mar-2008 17:07:42] <locohost> has anyone else noticed that zenoss runs like crap in a vm
[04-Mar-2008 17:08:54] <locohost> steve, are you getting any new dates in your rrds?
[04-Mar-2008 17:09:06] <btsteve> Let me seen
[04-Mar-2008 17:09:07] <btsteve> Let me see
[04-Mar-2008 17:10:42] <btsteve> dont see any in there
[04-Mar-2008 17:13:42] <klinstifen> btsteve: have they ever worked?
[04-Mar-2008 17:14:49] <locohost> there are values in your rrds, correct, just not new ones, i think he said it stopped after a restart
[04-Mar-2008 17:17:24] <klinstifen> oh ok
[04-Mar-2008 17:17:26] <btsteve> nope no dates on that one
[04-Mar-2008 17:17:49] <klinstifen> can you snmpwalk to that oid from the console?
[04-Mar-2008 17:17:59] <locohost> so, it never worked then. Didnt you say that it was working at first?
[04-Mar-2008 17:18:42] <btsteve> it worked for a few hours.
[04-Mar-2008 17:19:11] <locohost> maybe i pointed you at the wrong rrd file.
[04-Mar-2008 17:19:48] <locohost> your looking at ifInOctets_ifInOctets.rrd for eth0?
[04-Mar-2008 17:19:53] <louish> Hi all. I download the latest vmware image on zenoss. And it worked, but I wanted to give it a static ipaddy. I can't the settings in ipcfg-eth0, and the ipaddys changed now, but i can't get http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080 it just sits there waiting for ...... Have I missed another file that needed changing?
[04-Mar-2008 17:20:27] <locohost> should be able to edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
[04-Mar-2008 17:20:47] <louish> that is the file that I edited.
[04-Mar-2008 17:20:51] <btsteve> ok on that one i see a date of today at noon
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:03] <locohost> then restart network
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:17] <louish> I restarted as well.
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:18] <zaf> locohost, runs fine for me in a VM
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:20] <locohost> or run the ifup script
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:48] <louish> I can ssh to the "new" ip address okay. I just can't get to zenoss by http.
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:54] <locohost> one of my test boxes is vmwareserver 1.4, havent tried it in esx
[04-Mar-2008 17:21:56] <btsteve> i see graph lines !!!!
[04-Mar-2008 17:22:04] <louish> the web page will not load.
[04-Mar-2008 17:22:13] <louish> since I changed the ipaddress.
[04-Mar-2008 17:23:15] <klinstifen> btsteve: nice!
[04-Mar-2008 17:23:43] <btsteve> Ok i am sure i have some other questions, i will let it run for a while and test it. Thanks
[04-Mar-2008 17:25:58] <locohost> what is the zen equiv of httpd.conf?
[04-Mar-2008 17:26:20] <zaf> ah. i use XenSource
[04-Mar-2008 17:26:32] <locohost> maybe there is something there about the if it listens on
[04-Mar-2008 17:27:20] <louish> Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. but right now I can't king httpd.conf anywhere.
[04-Mar-2008 17:31:18] <locohost> you sure your trying to hit 8080 on the new ip?
[04-Mar-2008 17:31:32] <louish> yes,
[04-Mar-2008 17:32:06] <louish> I think there is another setting that needs to be changed when one wants to change the ipaddy
[04-Mar-2008 17:32:56] <louish> but where? I can't find anything listed in the faq's. And I'm having issues downloading the zenoss admin guide,(web site is timeing out.)
[04-Mar-2008 17:33:27] <locohost> you try kicking zenoss after you changed the ip?
[04-Mar-2008 17:34:12] <louish> that was the plan..
[04-Mar-2008 17:39:41] <locohost> can you wget localhost:8080
[04-Mar-2008 17:40:19] <louish> I just deleted the vmware image and redid it. I'm now back into zenoss.
[04-Mar-2008 17:40:44] <louish> I edited the file again, and restart the network and this time it works.
[04-Mar-2008 17:45:20] <locohost> <dtml-in expr="grabdata(cmdb_name='$devname')"> does not seem to work klinstifen. if put the device name between the single quotes manually, it works
[04-Mar-2008 17:52:57] <locohost> the immediate parent object would be the device name, can i reference it that way?
[04-Mar-2008 18:17:23] <locohost> anyone have any other ideas about getting the device name in a dtml script run from zenoss?
[04-Mar-2008 18:34:33] <klinstifen> $devname didn't work?
[04-Mar-2008 18:36:44] <locohost> no :(
[04-Mar-2008 18:36:50] <locohost> dev name is not defined
[04-Mar-2008 18:37:08] <locohost> someone suggested something like this: <dtml-let devname="this().getId()"> but that is not working either
[04-Mar-2008 18:37:28] <klinstifen> where are you calling this script?
[04-Mar-2008 18:37:59] <locohost> http://localhost:8080/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/devices/server01/viewcmdb
[04-Mar-2008 18:38:33] <locohost> its not really on localhost, not that that matters, but im using an ssh tunnel
[04-Mar-2008 18:39:17] <klinstifen> is this a template?
[04-Mar-2008 18:39:41] <locohost> no, i made it
[04-Mar-2008 18:40:22] <klinstifen> no i mean...where is it being called? is it part of a performance template, is it a command...
[04-Mar-2008 18:41:03] <locohost> my plan was to link it to the hardware tab, but im currently browsing to it
[04-Mar-2008 18:42:04] <klinstifen> what output does it give you?
[04-Mar-2008 18:42:46] <locohost> its getting an empty set, like its not passing any argument
[04-Mar-2008 18:43:25] <locohost> if i replace <dtml-in expr="grabdata(cmdb_name=devname)"> with name='server01' it works
[04-Mar-2008 18:46:21] <locohost> its like <dtml-let devname="this().getId()"> is not finding anything so its setting devname to nil
[04-Mar-2008 18:46:38] <klinstifen> ohhh ok
[04-Mar-2008 18:47:24] <locohost> im so close to having this work, lol. This last part and then its just graphical stuff
[04-Mar-2008 18:47:38] <klinstifen> what will it show you?
[04-Mar-2008 18:47:42] <klinstifen> what info are you after?
[04-Mar-2008 18:47:55] <klinstifen> err what does your script do?
[04-Mar-2008 18:48:13] <locohost> when i nagigate to a device in zenoss, it will display all the info for that device out of an existing mysql cmdb that i already have
[04-Mar-2008 18:54:20] <locohost> maybe im not being clear.
[04-Mar-2008 18:54:52] <locohost> im doing
[04-Mar-2008 18:54:52] <locohost> <dtml-in expr="grabdata(cmdb_name='server01')"> and that works, send me (select * from cmdb_device where name = 'server01';)
[04-Mar-2008 18:54:59] FuL|OUT is now known as fulgas
[04-Mar-2008 18:55:29] <locohost> except, all my devbices are not named server01, so i need it to pull off the device im looking at, or parent object or something
[04-Mar-2008 18:56:45] <selfish> so...
[04-Mar-2008 18:56:47] <selfish> hi
[04-Mar-2008 18:57:02] <selfish> zenoss looks pretty cool
[04-Mar-2008 18:57:18] <locohost> or maybe its queriing sql for a server named this().getId()
[04-Mar-2008 18:58:07] <selfish> I think I'm going to like it, but I see some deficiencies
[04-Mar-2008 18:58:40] <locohost> buggar, i have a meeting for the next hour or so, thanks for the help guys, ill be back in a bit
[04-Mar-2008 19:04:11] <selfish> but zenoss isn't really open source, correct?
[04-Mar-2008 19:04:25] <klinstifen> what do you mean?
[04-Mar-2008 19:04:31] <selfish> the devs aren't begging for patches like other projects
[04-Mar-2008 19:04:48] <klinstifen> blink, blink
[04-Mar-2008 19:05:07] <selfish> i was looking at the site, and everything says contribute documentation
[04-Mar-2008 19:05:11] <selfish> or did i miss something?
[04-Mar-2008 19:05:46] <Teecee> Hey guys, I am looking into monitoring my network and some DBs and have been spending some time reading about cacti and zenoss. I am wondering if someone could compare the two for me. All of my network gear is Cisco with a mix of linux/windows servers.
[04-Mar-2008 19:06:56] <klinstifen> i don't know what you are asking...it's open source. we can all modify it
[04-Mar-2008 19:09:22] <Teecee> just wondering if there were any differences besides looks? Does one have more plugins than the other? Which one has a bigger user community? Which one is the most flexible? What about ease of use?
[04-Mar-2008 19:09:42] <selfish> meh, maybe i don't know either
[04-Mar-2008 19:11:13] <selfish> okay, so anyway, i have a question...
[04-Mar-2008 19:11:40] <selfish> The first device I added was my core router and zenoss started polling everything in the route table
[04-Mar-2008 19:11:59] <selfish> but I don't want that, is there a way to direct the auto-discovery to certain subnets?
[04-Mar-2008 19:12:16] <selfish> and by polling i meant auto-discovery polling
[04-Mar-2008 19:15:41] <klinstifen> you could turn off auto-discoverty
[04-Mar-2008 19:15:44] <klinstifen> *discovery
[04-Mar-2008 19:15:48] <klinstifen> then add a network manually
[04-Mar-2008 19:15:50] <klinstifen> and just scan that
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:10] <klinstifen> teecee: cacti has been around longer so i would think the community is bigger
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:15] <klinstifen> and thus has more pluggins
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:31] <klinstifen> but it is targetted towards network devices and zenoss is for a larger infrastructure
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:38] <klinstifen> servers, network equip, etc
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:50] <klinstifen> although both work off of rrd so i guess the compatibility is the same
[04-Mar-2008 19:16:55] <klinstifen> zenoss takes nagios pluggins
[04-Mar-2008 19:17:00] <klinstifen> so i guess that's a one up on cacti
[04-Mar-2008 19:17:13] <klinstifen> depends on what you want to do, Teecee
[04-Mar-2008 19:17:15] <Teecee> when you say take nagios plugins, can you go into detail?
[04-Mar-2008 19:18:14] <Teecee> I want to monitor traffic of vlans, certain ports on my switches, wireless associations with my access points, server cpu, memory, hdd, sql and mysql db connections, maybe some printer status like if a printer is jamed or what not
[04-Mar-2008 19:18:35] <selfish> I've used tons of monitoring apps, and fwiw I think I like zenoss the best so far
[04-Mar-2008 19:18:53] <selfish> nagios is stagnating and catci is like Mr Johnson's 8th grade project
[04-Mar-2008 19:19:02] <Teecee> lol selfish
[04-Mar-2008 19:19:21] <klinstifen> teecee, http://www.zenoss.com/community/docs/howtos/create-modify-nagios-templates/?searchterm=nagios

[04-Mar-2008 19:19:50] <klinstifen> yeah nagios isn't so hot
[04-Mar-2008 19:20:13] <selfish> it's functionally sound, but man, it hasn't been updated in AGES
[04-Mar-2008 19:20:19] <klinstifen> i used hyperic and zenoss is much better
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:02] <selfish> I was hoping that I could do directed auto-discovery, like WUG.
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:11] <Teecee> so can I monitor all of those things I mentioned?
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:18] <selfish> I enter my list of subnets and it scans nightly for new IP's
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:28] <klinstifen> selfish, you just have to do it a bit more manually
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:30] <klinstifen> still be targeted
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:34] <klinstifen> you pick subnet and say "go"
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:40] <selfish> cool
[04-Mar-2008 19:21:53] <klinstifen> teecee, most of them. some will require effort on your part
[04-Mar-2008 19:22:01] <selfish> Teecee: anything that can be monitored with snmp, wmi, dcom... perl, batch...
[04-Mar-2008 19:22:05] <selfish> I could keep going ;)
[04-Mar-2008 19:22:28] <selfish> yeah, some require you to actually do some work *gasp*
[04-Mar-2008 19:22:47] <Teecee> when you say effort on my part, does that mean creating my own code, or just configing some plugin or addon on the client?
[04-Mar-2008 19:22:58] <klinstifen> wha?!
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:21] <Teecee> because I am not a programmer, and am not profecient enough in linux to write my own code, I spend most of my day with routers, switches, etc
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:26] <klinstifen> yeah, you may have to code
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:39] <selfish> it depends how crazy you want to get
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:39] <klinstifen> there are a lot of pluggins
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:45] <klinstifen> well you could always learn and then write some
[04-Mar-2008 19:23:52] <selfish> that's crazy talk
[04-Mar-2008 19:25:05] <Teecee> is there a site that has a lot of zenoss plugins?
[04-Mar-2008 19:26:01] <selfish> i thought you said you spent some time reading...
[04-Mar-2008 19:26:41] <Teecee> lol
[04-Mar-2008 19:29:08] <Teecee> cacti and nagios plugins are easy to find, zenoss not so much
[04-Mar-2008 19:29:53] <Teecee> like for cacti and nagios just hit their forums and find tons of plugins
[04-Mar-2008 19:29:59] <klinstifen> yeah
[04-Mar-2008 19:30:08] <klinstifen> i think the zenoss community is still developing in that regard
[04-Mar-2008 19:36:53] <klinstifen> teecee, kidding aside i am pretty happy with it and will continue using it for a while
[04-Mar-2008 19:37:02] <klinstifen> has already helped me with a variety of issues
[04-Mar-2008 19:42:49] <Teecee> such as?
[04-Mar-2008 19:43:40] <klinstifen> detecting dictionary attack, bandwidth bottle necks, down printer queues, exchange server overload, network outagages, service/process crashes
[04-Mar-2008 19:44:48] <kgoedtel> teecee can use nagios plugins....
[04-Mar-2008 19:44:54] <kgoedtel> err zenoss can
[04-Mar-2008 19:45:23] <selfish> it cured my aids!
[04-Mar-2008 19:45:40] <kgoedtel> wow!
[04-Mar-2008 19:46:18] <Teecee> so with that link you sent me I can pretty much convert any nagios plugin to zenoss?
[04-Mar-2008 19:47:06] <Teecee> http://www.zenoss.com/community/docs/howtos/create-modify-nagios-templates/?searchterm=nagios
[04-Mar-2008 19:47:08] <Teecee> that one

[04-Mar-2008 19:47:31] <Teecee> ty adytum-bot
[04-Mar-2008 19:47:41] <selfish> so I tuned off auto-disco, but how do I remove the 400 pages of subnets it discovered?
[04-Mar-2008 19:50:09] <klinstifen> selfish: go to networks menu. select the first check-box, hold down shift, select last check-box. select delete networks from drop down
[04-Mar-2008 19:50:58] <selfish> maybe that's why i'm confused, my dropdown box has numbers in it
[04-Mar-2008 19:51:13] <selfish> 167863552
[04-Mar-2008 19:51:43] <selfish> aah, THAT drop down box
[04-Mar-2008 19:51:46] <selfish> nm
[04-Mar-2008 20:09:00] <wassy121> Hello there. I have a dual-NIC bonded setup (under bond0) that zenoss is misdetecting the speed of. It says it is a 10MB link, when it is really 2 x 1000MB links bonded. So, I get incorrect threshold errors.
[04-Mar-2008 20:09:09] <wassy121> How can I change the speed of an interface device?
[04-Mar-2008 20:09:42] <wassy121> http://ZENOSS/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/devices/HOSTNAME/os/interfaces/bond0/viewIpInterface doesn't have any place to edit the speed.
[04-Mar-2008 20:10:18] <wassy121> (basically, it screams at me when we do our DB copies between machines hitting 12-15 MB/s).
[04-Mar-2008 20:15:22] <johns55> anyone have a problem with scrolling down in event history?
[04-Mar-2008 20:17:29] <locohost> i would say cacti is more geared to trending and graphing, and zenoss is more of a console for your noc to watch
[04-Mar-2008 20:32:40] <locohost> klin, you still around?
[04-Mar-2008 20:33:39] <idea4gud> i installed zenoss 1.2.7 but it didnt had zeoctl and zopectl libs
[04-Mar-2008 20:34:05] <idea4gud> so i erased and wanna install zenoss1.2.2 bu it complains that name conflict appears
[04-Mar-2008 20:34:22] <idea4gud> any suggestion how do i install the other version
[04-Mar-2008 20:34:39] <klinstifen> loco: yeah
[04-Mar-2008 20:35:01] <klinstifen> idea: current version is 2.1.2
[04-Mar-2008 20:35:28] <idea4gud> k my bad its 2.1.2
[04-Mar-2008 20:35:55] <locohost> im still not getting anywhere with referencing the devname in my dtml, i was wondering if maybe you had any other ideas, or have any idea what mistake i may be makiung
[04-Mar-2008 20:35:55] <wassy121> how did you erase?
[04-Mar-2008 20:36:06] <idea4gud> but then does it hav the req libs which 2.1.71 misses
[04-Mar-2008 20:36:17] <idea4gud> rpm -e zenoss
[04-Mar-2008 20:36:53] <klinstifen> i haven't done any dtml stuff
[04-Mar-2008 20:36:57] <klinstifen> did you use a guide?
[04-Mar-2008 20:37:01] <idea4gud> i am new to linux using centos so any stupid qn pardon me
[04-Mar-2008 20:37:19] <idea4gud> yes
[04-Mar-2008 20:37:32] <wassy121> idea: you need to completely remove the zenoss installation, it seems to be messed up. rpm -qa | grep zen
[04-Mar-2008 20:37:39] <wassy121> that will show you all the zen packages installed.
[04-Mar-2008 20:37:49] <idea4gud> given on website as well hav installation packages
[04-Mar-2008 20:38:29] <wassy121> You may need to run 'rpm -e --noscripts zenoss-zenpacks-. . . ' if the zenoss main package is not installed. It has some scripts in the preun/postun that rely on zenoss running.
[04-Mar-2008 20:39:25] <idea4gud> wassy: do i do rpm -qa grep ZEN from any where or from the folder where i have saved the zenoss.rpm
[04-Mar-2008 20:40:08] <locohost> rpm -qa|grep -i ZEN so you dont get thrown off by the case
[04-Mar-2008 20:40:33] <locohost> from anywhere
[04-Mar-2008 20:40:47] <wassy121> idea: anywhere. the 'rpm' command is a base part of CentOS, and just reads the database of installed packages from /var/lib/rpm
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:03] <wassy121> That command just checks to see if the package is installed in the RPM database.
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:05] <idea4gud> thnx it returns 2 entries zenity-2.16. and zenoss-2.17.el5
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:20] <wassy121> yeah, which means you have zenoss 2.17 installed still.
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:30] <wassy121> Which is why the other RPM won't install.
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:36] <locohost> so, rpm -e zenoss-2.17.el5 "should" do it
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:43] <locohost> with sudo, or as root
[04-Mar-2008 20:41:44] <wassy121> ./agree
[04-Mar-2008 20:43:21] <louish> Hi all. I have the latest zenoss installed. And I've discovered my subnet, but I have quite a few devices that don't have snmp enabled or not installed. Would it be better to "install/enable" snmp for monitoring?
[04-Mar-2008 20:43:32] <idea4gud> it says %preun(zenoss) scriplet failer exit 1
[04-Mar-2008 20:43:52] <idea4gud> i did this b4 got the same respomse
[04-Mar-2008 20:44:11] <selfish> louish: only if you want to monitor those devices...
[04-Mar-2008 20:44:26] <wassy121> So, that is your problem. It runs the scripts, and fails and thus can't remove the package.
[04-Mar-2008 20:44:36] <wassy121> Try 'rpm -e --noscripts zenoss-2.17.el5'
[04-Mar-2008 20:49:59] <selfish> what protocol is used for auto-disco?
[04-Mar-2008 20:50:13] <selfish> is it just an icmp sweep?
[04-Mar-2008 20:50:26] <louish> selfish, Yes, I do. I have a few "linux's" here that I want to monitor. I'm just trying to figure out what needs to be done. Is there an agent. or can I just install smnpd and set it for public read
[04-Mar-2008 20:51:03] <selfish> yes then, you need to install net-snmp and net-snmp-utils
[04-Mar-2008 20:51:18] <selfish> and don't do public, make a community string
[04-Mar-2008 20:51:23] <selfish> slacker
[04-Mar-2008 20:51:27] <louish> ?
[04-Mar-2008 20:56:34] <idea4gud> hi even 2.1.2 complains that it doens hav zeoctl or zopectl
[04-Mar-2008 20:56:48] <idea4gud> i mean it says no such directory found
[04-Mar-2008 20:57:24] <locohost> lou: sudo yum install net-snmp net-snmp-utils
[04-Mar-2008 20:57:47] <locohost> then clear out the /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and enter just "rocommunity mycommunity" in the conf
[04-Mar-2008 20:57:55] <locohost> that will get you going with the most basic config possible
[04-Mar-2008 20:58:23] <locohost> you could do rocommunity mycommunity <nms ip> .1.3
[04-Mar-2008 20:58:25] <locohost> if you wanted to
[04-Mar-2008 20:58:30] <wassy121> idea: what is the error it posts?
[04-Mar-2008 20:58:36] <locohost> to restrict polling to just your nms station
[04-Mar-2008 20:59:20] <idea4gud> wassy; zeoctl /opt/zenoss/bn/zenoss line 99: no such file or dir found
[04-Mar-2008 20:59:29] <locohost> if you want zenoss to see the disks, you will need to ad "disk /" "disk /var" and so on on single lines to your snmpd.conf
[04-Mar-2008 20:59:38] <idea4gud> wassy; zopectl /opt/zenoss/bn/zenoss line 99: no such file or dir found
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:04] <wassy121> idea: what command are you running to get that error?
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:46] <locohost> idea, i had a similar problem, and i copied a few files over from a working install
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:56] <locohost> sudo scp /opt/zenoss/bin/zeoctl 10.11.2.20:/opt/zenoss/bin/zeoctl
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:56] <locohost> sudo scp /opt/zenoss/etc/zeo.conf 10.11.2.20:/opt/zenoss/etc/zeo.conf
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:56] <locohost> sudo scp /opt/zenoss/bin/runzeo 10.11.2.20:/opt/zenoss/bin/runzeo
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:56] <locohost> sudo scp /opt/zenoss/bin/zopectl 10.11.2.20:/opt/zenoss/bin/zopectl
[04-Mar-2008 21:00:56] <idea4gud> just startin the service as per thei nstruction given on the doc for el5 notes
[04-Mar-2008 21:01:22] <locohost> is what i did from the machine with the working zenoss, dont mind the private ip of my zenoss server
[04-Mar-2008 21:01:39] <idea4gud> but i dont hav any wrkin machine with zenoss
[04-Mar-2008 21:02:35] <wassy121> idea: you are running /etc/init.d/zenoss start, and it is kicking back those errors?
[04-Mar-2008 21:03:17] <wassy121> can you paste the output (less than 4 lines please) into IRC?
[04-Mar-2008 21:03:27] <wassy121> More than 4 lines, send it to pastebin.ca or something.
[04-Mar-2008 21:03:42] <wassy121> And if it _EXACTLY_ 4 lines. Don't do anything.
[04-Mar-2008 21:04:13] <wassy121> (/joke)
[04-Mar-2008 21:04:18] <idea4gud> k

[04-Mar-2008 21:04:32] <idea4gud> yes
[04-Mar-2008 21:04:34] <idea4gud> bin
[04-Mar-2008 21:05:04] <locohost> does /opt/zenoss/bin/zeoctl exist on the machine?
[04-Mar-2008 21:05:43] <wassy121> You aren't supposed to run /opt/zenoss/bin/zenoss directly.
[04-Mar-2008 21:05:58] <wassy121> It should be called from '/etc/init.d/zenoss start'
[04-Mar-2008 21:06:18] <wassy121> Make sure no other zen processes are running - 'ps auxww | grep -i zen'
[04-Mar-2008 21:06:35] <selfish> wtf is ww on ps?
[04-Mar-2008 21:06:46] <wassy121> wtf do those acronymns mean?
[04-Mar-2008 21:07:11] <locohost> wide output?
[04-Mar-2008 21:07:42] <selfish> oh, were you being serious wassy121? You're the one that typed it...
[04-Mar-2008 21:07:43] <wassy121> Ah, that is what you meant :) Yeah, one 'w' gives you past 80 columns. 2 'w's give you multiple lines.
[04-Mar-2008 21:07:58] <selfish> aah, ok :)
[04-Mar-2008 21:08:31] <wassy121> I thought you were using some interweb slang and using 'ww' and 'ps' as acronymns.
[04-Mar-2008 21:08:50] <selfish> heh, i try to stay away from the intarwebz
[04-Mar-2008 21:09:00] <locohost> wassy, i wasnt suggesting he run /opt/zenoss/bin/zenoss, i was respponding to his error "zopectl /opt/zenoss/bn/zenoss line 99"
[04-Mar-2008 21:09:05] <selfish> it's all just a fad anyway...
[04-Mar-2008 21:09:13] <locohost> line 99 is trying to call /opt/zenoss/bin/zeoctl
[04-Mar-2008 21:09:20] <locohost> wwhich, sounds like does not exist on his box
[04-Mar-2008 21:09:55] <wassy121> Well, it is technically a function that is used to call most the daemons (not just zeoctl) on line 99.
[04-Mar-2008 21:10:54] <locohost> yeah, but its failing on zopectl
[04-Mar-2008 21:11:14] <klinstifen> loco: did you follow a guide for you dtml stuff?
[04-Mar-2008 21:11:34] <idea4gud> emon: zeoctl /opt/zenoss/bin/zenoss: line 99: /opt/zenoss/bin/zeoctl: No such

[04-Mar-2008 21:12:16] <idea4gud> took ages to copy and paste as new in linux
[04-Mar-2008 21:12:26] <locohost> yeah, as far as the guide went anyway, i the thing im trying to do not specifically is not in a guide that i could find
[04-Mar-2008 21:12:37] <locohost> i cant to call the name of the objects container
[04-Mar-2008 21:13:28] <locohost> when i run http://localhost:8080/zport/dmd/Devices/Server/Linux/devices/admin01.cluster.domain/viewcmdb, viewcmdb needs to know the device name is admin01.cluster.domain
[04-Mar-2008 21:13:36] <klinstifen> loco: if you could reference what you did then i might be able to help
[04-Mar-2008 21:13:37] <locohost> same with admin02, and so on
[04-Mar-2008 21:13:47] <locohost> k,ill put it in a pastie
[04-Mar-2008 21:14:36] <klinstifen> how did you creat viewcmdb
[04-Mar-2008 21:15:20] <locohost> selected new dtml object from the drop down in zope
[04-Mar-2008 21:16:21] <locohost> idea, im pretty sure your missing hte 4 files i mentioned
[04-Mar-2008 21:18:46] <klinstifen> loco: doc or method?
[04-Mar-2008 21:19:58] <selfish> ok, I broke zenoss
[04-Mar-2008 21:20:07] <selfish> day 1 :(
[04-Mar-2008 21:20:20] <idea4gud> wassy u still here
[04-Mar-2008 21:20:34] <idea4gud> waitin for ur input
[04-Mar-2008 21:20:43] <selfish> under Browse By - Networks it shows nothing at all, but i choose Add Network and type in my IP and it says already in use
[04-Mar-2008 21:23:41] <wassy121> idea: no clue. Maybe the zenoss package didn't install correctly?

[04-Mar-2008 21:45:14] <idea4gud> it complains the same but now first it says zopectl is missing
[04-Mar-2008 21:45:40] <idea4gud> then zeoctl is missing
[04-Mar-2008 21:46:42] <locohost> so it reversed the order?
[04-Mar-2008 21:47:55] <idea4gud> wait lemme check if copied to rite location where it shud hav been
[04-Mar-2008 21:47:58] <idea4gud> yes
[04-Mar-2008 21:48:30] <locohost> /opt/zenoss/bin. right?
[04-Mar-2008 21:48:43] <locohost> maybe its a permission thing, chown it as zenoss
[04-Mar-2008 21:55:15] <locohost> well, until tomorrow.
[04-Mar-2008 21:55:50] <locohost> Ill see you on the dark side of the moon
[04-Mar-2008 21:56:33] <bush|werk> if the dam breaks open many years too soon?
[04-Mar-2008 21:56:59] <locohost> just in case there is no room on the hill
[04-Mar-2008 21:57:12] <bush|werk> werd
[04-Mar-2008 21:57:33] <locohost> there is no dark side of the moon really, matter of fact its all dark
[04-Mar-2008 21:58:36] <bush|werk> does zendisc run the zenmodeler process after it finds a device?
[04-Mar-2008 21:58:41] <bush|werk> or is that a manual operation?
[04-Mar-2008 21:59:05] <bush|werk> like, if i were to script zendisc to scan the network once daily, would i have to explicitly run zenmodeler?
[04-Mar-2008 21:59:26] <idea4gud> locohost: it complains for zeo.conf
[04-Mar-2008 22:00:28] <locohost> and, it no longer complains about hte file i gave you?
[04-Mar-2008 22:00:31] <idea4gud> errno 2 : no file /etc/zeo.conf
[04-Mar-2008 22:00:37] <idea4gud> yes i guess we made some progress
[04-Mar-2008 22:00:58] <locohost> well, i think i put t hat file in the home of the shell login i gave you
[04-Mar-2008 22:01:11] <locohost> try putting that one there to and chownin i5t
[04-Mar-2008 22:01:21] <locohost> im about to go home, so, ill check back after i get a beer in me
[04-Mar-2008 22:01:33] <idea4gud> that: here refers to?
[04-Mar-2008 22:01:51] <idea4gud> k
[04-Mar-2008 22:04:25] <btsteve> where can you set $ZENHOME for all of the files?
[04-Mar-2008 22:08:05] <bush|werk> btsteve: /usr/local/zenoss
[04-Mar-2008 22:08:15] <bush|werk> or... what are you asking?
[04-Mar-2008 22:28:08] <idea4gud> locohost: hi it says file not found for zeo.congf
[04-Mar-2008 22:40:55] <selfish> Is there any kind of link between a location and a network?
[04-Mar-2008 22:45:10] fulgas is now known as FuL|OUT
[04-Mar-2008 22:45:28] <bush|werk> i dont think so
[04-Mar-2008 22:45:39] <bush|werk> a network can span multiple locations technically
[04-Mar-2008 22:46:09] <bush|werk> if youre referring to the location field in a device's properties, i think thats more for organization purposes
[04-Mar-2008 22:47:21] <selfish> I was referring to the location for mapping purposes
[04-Mar-2008 22:47:28] <locohost_> i think it wants like /headquarters/floor2/south-west_closet
[04-Mar-2008 22:47:33] <locohost_> or something, for the location
[04-Mar-2008 22:47:50] <selfish> yeah, we just happen to have a /21 for each site
[04-Mar-2008 22:48:48] <selfish> but when something is down, the mapping is going by locations/devices
[04-Mar-2008 22:49:43] <idea4gud> hi loco good 2 c u abck
[04-Mar-2008 22:49:46] <idea4gud> back
[04-Mar-2008 22:49:55] <locohost_> yo. any luck?
[04-Mar-2008 22:49:55] <idea4gud> that file is not there
[04-Mar-2008 22:50:01] <idea4gud> zeo.conf
[04-Mar-2008 22:50:04] <locohost_> k
[04-Mar-2008 22:50:09] <idea4gud> just one file i guess zeoctl
[04-Mar-2008 22:50:13] <idea4gud> in home
[04-Mar-2008 22:51:31] <locohost_> now it is
[04-Mar-2008 22:53:39] <locohost_> anyone able to help me figure out how to reference ${device/id} inside a dtml script i made?

[04-Mar-2008 23:08:33] <locohost_> selfish, i didnt see what you last said. it maps by network/location so you know which network team to call. the seattle network team or the denver network team
[04-Mar-2008 23:08:33] <locohost_> etc
[04-Mar-2008 23:10:04] <locohost_> or, site /21, or site /37
[04-Mar-2008 23:11:21] <locohost_> idea4, any luck?
[04-Mar-2008 23:11:25] <idea4gud> loco: i am not able to find file pmed u plz look @ dat
[04-Mar-2008 23:12:02] <locohost_> i cant see your pm
[04-Mar-2008 23:12:08] <locohost_> are you not registered?
[04-Mar-2008 23:12:55] <idea4gud> i am now reg

[04-Mar-2008 23:13:49] <locohost_> zeo.conf

[04-Mar-2008 23:14:32] <idea4gud> now can u look @ my pm
[04-Mar-2008 23:14:54] <locohost_> take out the ~ in ~/opt/..
[04-Mar-2008 23:15:44] <selfish> locohost_: so if it alerts and maps based on location, why do I need to configure networks?
[04-Mar-2008 23:15:45] <locohost_> i was getting a little overzelous in my home referencing the first time i typed the scp out
[04-Mar-2008 23:16:20] <locohost_> locations with multiple networks
[04-Mar-2008 23:16:59] <locohost_> the network is for maping, and drawing out logical networks, where location breaks that down into physical location
[04-Mar-2008 23:17:42] <locohost_> you could have a vpn between 2 locations and from a network view it would be transparent, you want to know that half of the network is at a different location
[04-Mar-2008 23:17:49] <selfish> yeah, but I'm a good designer so logical and physical are the same. ;)
[04-Mar-2008 23:18:06] <locohost_> or you have a small network :)
[04-Mar-2008 23:18:19] <selfish> sheeeeeeit
[04-Mar-2008 23:18:36] <selfish> 40 sites across US, Canada, and S. America
[04-Mar-2008 23:19:01] <selfish> tiny
[04-Mar-2008 23:20:25] <locohost_> i wasnt expecting anything under 41, pittens, i tell you
[04-Mar-2008 23:20:51] <locohost_> so, you have 40 locations, and each location is 1 network, with no exceptions?
[04-Mar-2008 23:21:16] <selfish> yeah, each one is a /21
[04-Mar-2008 23:21:37] <locohost_> ahh, lol, i though you ment /21 like that was your locaiton name before
[04-Mar-2008 23:22:18] <selfish> heh, yeah i've never seen an app that used root /'s like it's a file system
[04-Mar-2008 23:22:40] <locohost_> well, in my env, i have 5 seperate networks in 1 location that cant talk to each other, and an admin network that is the only way to talk to them all
[04-Mar-2008 23:22:53] <locohost_> so, devices are on multiple networks, and stuff
[04-Mar-2008 23:23:02] <selfish> ouch
[04-Mar-2008 23:23:30] <locohost_> they all have different tubes, different ip blocks, etc
[04-Mar-2008 23:23:37] <locohost_> the internet is a series of tubes

[04-Mar-2008 23:26:53] <locohost_> it think we use bacula
[04-Mar-2008 23:27:16] <johns55> what?>!
[04-Mar-2008 23:29:33] <locohost_> http://sourceforge.net/projects/bacula thats what is backup up my almost production zenoss server

[04-Mar-2008 23:30:00] <selfish> we use backup exec
[04-Mar-2008 23:30:15] <johns55> so bacula just backs up the zenoss home directory?
[04-Mar-2008 23:30:32] <johns55> or are u running the zenbackup as a cron and bacula comes in and pulls the tar in ZENHOME/backup
[04-Mar-2008 23:32:21] <locohost_> not sure, i dont do the backups, but it does incremental backups of the entier box, so we could restore any file on the system
[04-Mar-2008 23:33:10] <idea4gud> it says cant start /opt/zenoss/bin/runzeo

[05-Mar-2008 14:36:45] <sr_> software details in Linux machines?
[05-Mar-2008 14:39:44] <sr_> i couldn't get software details once i modeled Linux machines with zenoss..
[05-Mar-2008 14:57:27] <Teecee> I am getting an event "snmp agent down on device..." on all of my cisco access points, but snmp is working because it discovered them, pulled the ios version, location, name, and I can view the stats on my different interfaces and vlans... Any idea why zenoss is telling me this? I login to the access point and SNMP IS enabled.
[05-Mar-2008 15:01:36] <locohost> can you walk the devices manually in zenoss?
[05-Mar-2008 15:03:36] <Teecee> walk the devices manually? I do not know what that means
[05-Mar-2008 15:14:21] <locohost> when looking at the status page of the device, from the drop down arrow, run command --> snmpwalk
[05-Mar-2008 15:19:48] <Teecee> it worked

[05-Mar-2008 15:27:06] <Teecee> pretty much all of them
[05-Mar-2008 15:27:10] <locohost> is it a red event, or an orage event?
[05-Mar-2008 15:27:13] <locohost> orange*
[05-Mar-2008 15:27:14] <Teecee> orange
[05-Mar-2008 15:27:32] <locohost> im new to zenoss myself, does that mean it was red, but is not anymore?
[05-Mar-2008 15:27:57] <Teecee> i am on my second day of using zenoss so i am pretty new also
[05-Mar-2008 15:28:53] <locohost> when you drill down to that device, what exactly does it say is wrong with it?
[05-Mar-2008 15:29:31] <Teecee> when I click on the orange event, I get snmp agent down on device DEVICENAME

[05-Mar-2008 15:33:59] <Teecee> 20 hours
[05-Mar-2008 15:34:08] <Teecee> dont worry, i have plenty more with this error
[05-Mar-2008 15:34:18] <Teecee> the event class is /status/snmp
[05-Mar-2008 15:34:28] <Teecee> maybe forcing the snmpwalk fixes it?
[05-Mar-2008 15:34:49] <Teecee> i just ran a snmpwalk on another, we will see what happens
[05-Mar-2008 15:36:40] <locohost> it s hould be doing that on its own every few 5 minutes, weird,
[05-Mar-2008 15:36:50] <locohost> verify all your processes are running
[05-Mar-2008 15:36:56] <locohost> sudo /etc/init.d/zenoss status
[05-Mar-2008 15:37:57] <Teecee> everything is running
[05-Mar-2008 15:40:47] <locohost> what is the first time and last time like?
[05-Mar-2008 15:40:56] <locohost> it says it was down for the entier 20 hours, and the time is right?
[05-Mar-2008 15:41:06] <locohost> and the count is increasing?
[05-Mar-2008 15:48:53] <twm1010> I don't think SNMP down messages are auto-cleared
[05-Mar-2008 15:51:18] <locohost> so maybe he had a layer 2 hiccup hours ago, and they just didnt clear, thats why im saying to look at the tstamp
[05-Mar-2008 15:52:42] <Teecee> how do I clear them?
[05-Mar-2008 16:22:39] <brittonr> morning.. i have a question
[05-Mar-2008 16:26:50] <brittonr> how do you change the ip address in the VMware zenoss download. i set it in the /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 but during startup it says IPADDR command not found
[05-Mar-2008 16:27:34] <brittonr> ?
[05-Mar-2008 16:33:38] <brittonr> morning.
[05-Mar-2008 16:34:04] <brittonr> i am having trouble with zenoss vmware down version.
[05-Mar-2008 16:35:44] <brittonr> i need to change the ip address to a static ip. but i get IPADDRR unknown command
[05-Mar-2008 16:44:49] <fym> install question: anyone seen this error: make: *** [pycrypto-install] Error 1
[05-Mar-2008 16:44:49] <fym> ?
[05-Mar-2008 16:53:44] <twm1010> brittonr: thats not where you change it
[05-Mar-2008 16:53:46] <twm1010> hold on
[05-Mar-2008 16:55:25] <twm1010> ok /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is what you want
[05-Mar-2008 16:55:48] <twm1010> here's my config if it helps

[05-Mar-2008 17:39:22] <brittonr> thanks for the help
[05-Mar-2008 18:13:18] <johns55> anyone experience where the event logs do not scroll down?
[05-Mar-2008 18:46:47] <wassy121> Hello all. Can someone explain to me how to manually set the speed of network interfaces in zenoss?
[05-Mar-2008 18:47:17] <wassy121> I get too many errors about surpassing the 75% threshold due to the NIC speed being incorrectly detected.
[05-Mar-2008 18:47:34] <johns55> yeah sometimes snmp will detect ur gigabit card as 100mbit
[05-Mar-2008 18:47:52] <johns55> so it will alert u when u hit 75mbit
[05-Mar-2008 18:47:55] <johns55> when u can go faster
[05-Mar-2008 18:48:10] <wassy121> Correct. How can I prevent/change this?
[05-Mar-2008 18:48:28] <johns55> depends, some devices detect it correctly
[05-Mar-2008 18:48:32] <johns55> others dont
[05-Mar-2008 18:48:49] <johns55> ive heard some people have adjusted their threshold to multiply by 100
[05-Mar-2008 18:49:02] <johns55> of course you would need to create a local copy of ur device template
[05-Mar-2008 18:49:45] <wassy121> Ah. That makes sense. There is no way to set the 'self.speed' variable it is calling though?
[05-Mar-2008 18:50:17] <wassy121> Rather than having to make a local device template (to be updated each time a change is needed . . . )
[05-Mar-2008 18:50:31] FuL|OUT is now known as fulgas
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:02] <johns55> well if a device is detected correctly, then the speed variable will be multiplied by 100
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:14] <johns55> why not just fix what is being detected incorrectly locally
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:21] <wassy121> Yeah, it is a weird bonded device.
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:21] <johns55> instead of messing with the global variables
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:37] <wassy121> How does Zen determine the speed?
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:41] <wassy121> Through mii-tool?
[05-Mar-2008 18:51:47] <johns55> snmp
[05-Mar-2008 18:53:17] <wassy121> Ah, I may be able to just add the appropriate speed in snmpd.conf. Let me investigate. Thanks for the helpful advice.
[05-Mar-2008 18:54:29] <johns55> no u cant
[05-Mar-2008 18:54:43] <johns55> it will affect other correctly detected nic speeds
[05-Mar-2008 18:54:48] <johns55> if u change anything in there
[05-Mar-2008 18:54:58] <johns55> u need to change this on the device that is having the problem in zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 18:58:19] <wassy121> The other NICs speeds don't matter on these machines. The two NICs are bonded together to a 'bond0' device. If I set the speed of that on the appropriate devices in snmpd.conf, won't that do the trick?
[05-Mar-2008 18:58:50] <johns55> hrm, im not sure how you would set the nic speed on snmpd.conf
[05-Mar-2008 18:58:54] <wassy121> Having the other NICs misrepresented shouldn't make much of a problem.
[05-Mar-2008 18:58:55] <johns55> but u can try and see if it works
[05-Mar-2008 18:59:00] <wassy121> I don't know either. But, I will try :)
[05-Mar-2008 18:59:13] <johns55> ok
[05-Mar-2008 19:06:58] <idea4gud> Hi guyz I am back to trouble u

[05-Mar-2008 19:15:38] <idea4gud> dowe havto run zenoss as user : zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:15:54] <idea4gud> also wat would be the password for zenoss user
[05-Mar-2008 19:20:09] <johns55> nothing
[05-Mar-2008 19:20:12] <johns55> useradd zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:20:17] <johns55> su zenoss to use the user
[05-Mar-2008 19:24:34] <wassy121> johns55: I think I found the solution to the mis-configured NIC speed. I guess there was a forum post about it on the zenoss boards. Testing it out, but it seems like it should work.
[05-Mar-2008 19:24:48] <wassy121> echo "interface bond0 5 1000000000" >> snmpd.conf
[05-Mar-2008 19:27:55] <johns55> hrm interesting
[05-Mar-2008 19:28:04] <johns55> bond0 is the interface but what does 5 do?
[05-Mar-2008 19:28:21] <wassy121> that is the 5th entry in the NIC config. Happens to be the 'port speed' entry.
[05-Mar-2008 19:28:23] <idea4gud> i have zenoss already added
[05-Mar-2008 19:28:45] <johns55> wassy: ahh ok thats good to know
[05-Mar-2008 19:28:52] <idea4gud> john55: i didnt add may b it added itseld
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:00] <idea4gud> now its askin for password
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:10] <johns55> what?
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:15] <johns55> r u using root to su to zenoss?
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:25] <idea4gud> first i was runnin ass root
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:38] <wassy121> idea: the user is installed with the rest of the package. You have to become root, then run 'su - zenoss'
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:41] <johns55> dont log off root, just do a su zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:43] <idea4gud> but i had this error which pasted online @
[05-Mar-2008 19:29:53] <idea4gud> i did the same
[05-Mar-2008 19:30:17] <idea4gud> but the password? i donno what's the default passwrd
[05-Mar-2008 19:30:49] <idea4gud> when i want to start the service its askin passwrd
[05-Mar-2008 19:30:52] <johns55> so as root u do an su zenoss and its asking for a pw?
[05-Mar-2008 19:30:52] <wassy121> the web front-end password?
[05-Mar-2008 19:31:47] <wassy121> idea: the error you are running into is because your zope.conf is not correct.
[05-Mar-2008 19:31:56] <idea4gud> i am tryin to etc/init.d/zenoss start
[05-Mar-2008 19:31:58] <wassy121> %define INSTANCE <<INSTANCE_HOME>>
[05-Mar-2008 19:32:04] <wassy121> Is incorrect. It should be:
[05-Mar-2008 19:32:12] <wassy121> %define INSTANCE /opt/zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:32:36] <idea4gud> k lemme try tht thnx
[05-Mar-2008 19:32:49] <wassy121> same thing with the other variable you have in <<>>
[05-Mar-2008 19:33:08] <johns55> you might also have installed it in /usr/local/zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:33:13] <johns55> make sure u have the right ZENHOME
[05-Mar-2008 19:36:08] <klinstifen> hey all
[05-Mar-2008 19:36:24] <klinstifen> has anyone added things to the os or hardware tab?
[05-Mar-2008 19:36:36] <klinstifen> i have a fax server on an aix box and i want to list it in that section
[05-Mar-2008 19:37:58] <johns55> what process name is the fax server using?
[05-Mar-2008 19:38:22] <johns55> you can monitor the process or the port
[05-Mar-2008 19:39:04] <idea4gud> why does it ask or password when i do
[05-Mar-2008 19:39:49] <idea4gud> running as zenoss: /etc/init.d/zenoss
[05-Mar-2008 19:40:02] <idea4gud> running as zenoss: /etc/init.d/zenoss start
[05-Mar-2008 19:40:27] <klinstifen> johns55: i have 8 pids associated with it...
[05-Mar-2008 19:40:45] <wassy121> because you don't run the init script as the zenoss user.
[05-Mar-2008 19:40:50] <wassy121> You run the init script as root.
[05-Mar-2008 19:41:04] <idea4gud> ok i did also service zenoss start
[05-Mar-2008 19:41:05] <klinstifen> idea: or you just say zenoss start
[05-Mar-2008 19:41:06] <idea4gud> smae thing
[05-Mar-2008 19:41:11] <klinstifen> as zenoss user
[05-Mar-2008 19:42:07] <klinstifen> johns55: how will zenoss determine if it is down...if i were monitoring the port
[05-Mar-2008 19:42:09] <wassy121> So, I modified the NIC speed on one of my devices. How do I get the zenoss portal to update the "speed" variable in Devices/Server/Linux/devices/Hostname/os/bond0 ?
[05-Mar-2008 19:42:17] <klinstifen> does it look for it and if not found say it is down?
[05-Mar-2008 19:42:55] <locohost> i added things to the hardware tab!
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:01] <klinstifen> nice!
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:02] <johns55> klingstifen: snmp will send an alert
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:04] <locohost> got it pulling from my existing cmdb
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:14] <johns55> wassy: model the device
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:27] <locohost> dtml method > document
[05-Mar-2008 19:43:36] <locohost> dtml document, that is
[05-Mar-2008 19:44:23] <locohost> i have just shy of 50 fields, things like storage_total, weight, circuit_id, lease_from, lease_end, purchase_date
[05-Mar-2008 19:47:33] <klinstifen> johns: maybe you could suggest a step 1 and 2?
[05-Mar-2008 19:48:10] <johns55> kinst: do you want to monitor the process or the port it runs off of?
[05-Mar-2008 19:50:23] <klinstifen> johns: process
[05-Mar-2008 19:51:15] <johns55> klins: find what the process name is..
[05-Mar-2008 19:51:44] <johns55> then go to Processes
[05-Mar-2008 19:51:54] <johns55> add a new process with that name
[05-Mar-2008 19:51:58] <johns55> set monitor to true
[05-Mar-2008 19:52:01] <johns55> the remodel the device
[05-Mar-2008 19:53:37] <klinstifen> ok easy
[05-Mar-2008 19:53:51] <klinstifen> i am running ps -ef and that gives path but not "name"
[05-Mar-2008 19:54:04] <johns55> do an lsof -i -n -P
[05-Mar-2008 19:54:10] <johns55> well it depends on ur distro
[05-Mar-2008 19:54:31] <klinstifen> yeah lsof not found
[05-Mar-2008 19:54:37] <locohost> i just did something kinda cool for my vmware server host, it monitors the memory and cpu usage of all the guests on my hosts
[05-Mar-2008 19:55:06] <johns55> try netstat
[05-Mar-2008 19:55:58] <locohost> ps auxf
[05-Mar-2008 19:56:12] <locohost> nevermind

[05-Mar-2008 19:58:55] <locohost> your ganan need var
[05-Mar-2008 19:59:04] <klinstifen> idea did you chmod chown zensocket?
[05-Mar-2008 19:59:09] <klinstifen> per the docs?
[05-Mar-2008 19:59:25] <locohost> ihe said he doesnt even have a var
[05-Mar-2008 19:59:38] <idea4gud> i am follwin inst given on site
[05-Mar-2008 20:00:10] <locohost> did your initial install fail? or did it seem to finish successfuly?
[05-Mar-2008 20:00:59] <idea4gud> well i was able to change the zope.conf as per instruction given to me
[05-Mar-2008 20:01:14] <idea4gud> now when i start the service it gives me this new error
[05-Mar-2008 20:02:28] <locohost> there is a lot of important stuff in /opt/zimbra/var/ ...like Data.fs for example

[05-Mar-2008 20:18:30] <locohost> idea4, have you tried fully removing the rpm and trying again from scratch
[05-Mar-2008 20:19:09] <locohost> im actually using zenoss-2.1.71-0.el4 under centos5
[05-Mar-2008 20:26:00] <idea4gud> i was using the same version
[05-Mar-2008 20:26:20] <idea4gud> i mean it had some pblm so i downloaded 2.1.2
[05-Mar-2008 20:28:25] <idea4gud> or do u want me to reinstall zenoss 2.1.71 el5 which i hav on my comp
[05-Mar-2008 20:36:02] <locohost> not sure what to tell you, im actually using the el4 version on centos5 which some would probably say is sub-optimal
[05-Mar-2008 20:37:12] <locohost> had to do it with no-deps because of some conflicts with openssl 0.9.7 vs 0.9.8

[05-Mar-2008 21:18:36] <wassy121> Hi. I have this switch in my network that has an interface with an ifType of "PropVirtual 53". This is throwing minor alerts in zenoss, because it can't read the ifInOctets, out octets, etc like it does for a standard network interface.
[05-Mar-2008 21:18:51] <wassy121> How can I tell zenoss not to try to monitor or graph that interface?

[05-Mar-2008 21:20:13] <wassy121> I can verify that 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.17.5183 is not there. Hence the error.

[05-Mar-2008 21:47:56] <wassy121> So, I can walk through 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.17 and see the ifOutUcastPkts for all the real interfaces.
[05-Mar-2008 21:48:36] <wassy121> And if I walk 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1, and grep for 5183 (the virtual interface that is throwing the errors), I get realistic-looking output.

[06-Mar-2008 04:54:49] <louish> hi all. I'm running the latest version of zenoss community. Everything works okay on the server, and on windows hosts that I want to monitor. But I having problems with my linux servers. I've installed the snmp and configured the host. but when I try a snmpwalk from the zenoss server it times out. I've done some trouble shooting, and a netstat -an |grep -i upd shows
[06-Mar-2008 04:55:03] <louish> udp 0 0 127.0.0.1:161 0.0.0.0:*
[06-Mar-2008 04:55:45] <louish> I think the 127.0.0.1 should be 0.0.0.0:161 instead. I don't know how to fix this.
[06-Mar-2008 04:56:34] <louish> anyone have any pointers?
[06-Mar-2008 04:56:42] <wassy121> louish: that is how mine looks too, but it is working fine.
[06-Mar-2008 04:56:49] <wassy121> May be your snmpd.conf is misconfigured.
[06-Mar-2008 04:57:25] <louish> Yeah, maybe but no matter what I try nothing seems to work. :(
[06-Mar-2008 04:57:40] <wassy121> try running 'snmpconf' on the machine in question, so that it allows access from the other device.
[06-Mar-2008 04:58:16] <wassy121> Hmm, I may be off. Mine is indeed running on 0.0.0.0
[06-Mar-2008 04:58:23] <louish> I've tried that, but my knowledge is very limited with snmpconf. not sure what I'm really doing with it.
[06-Mar-2008 04:58:44] <louish> yours is running 0.0.0.0. And NOT 127.0.0.1?
[06-Mar-2008 04:59:12] <wassy121> correct.
[06-Mar-2008 04:59:19] <louish> k
[06-Mar-2008 04:59:26] <wassy121> I was mistaken earlier. You need to have it listening on all IPs, not just localhost.
[06-Mar-2008 05:00:02] <louish> yeah, that's is what I want. but.... lol It isn't and I'm not sure where it's getting just the localhost
[06-Mar-2008 05:00:16] <wassy121> I have a separate question though. How do I get zenoss to stop monitoring a port?
[06-Mar-2008 05:00:40] <wassy121> I have an SMTP alert for the machine zenoss is running on that won't clear (the process is running and working).
[06-Mar-2008 05:00:58] <louish> did you acknowledge it?
[06-Mar-2008 05:01:21] <wassy121> 20 times or so.
[06-Mar-2008 05:01:42] <wassy121> But, I can do so again.
[06-Mar-2008 05:01:44] <louish> I've only just installed zenoss last night (first time ever using it) but I had a machine do down this morning, and I acknowledged it)
[06-Mar-2008 05:02:06] <wassy121> Yeah, that doesn't seem to stop the alert though.
[06-Mar-2008 05:02:14] <louish> and I guess you could delete it and re-add it.
[06-Mar-2008 05:02:17] <wassy121> This is my first zenoss install, but I have a fair amount of sysadmin exp.
[06-Mar-2008 05:02:33] <wassy121> I don't even care if it is monitored to be honest.
[06-Mar-2008 05:02:50] <louish> lol then I guess you could just delete it.
[06-Mar-2008 05:03:09] <wassy121> I have. It comes back.
[06-Mar-2008 05:03:58] <wassy121> Once I remove it, and the device gets remodelled (once every few hours or so) it comes back as an IPService.
[06-Mar-2008 05:04:02] <louish> where does it come back to? where are you deleting it from??
[06-Mar-2008 05:04:11] <louish> ah
[06-Mar-2008 05:05:09] <wassy121> I am deleting it from the OS tab of the device.
[06-Mar-2008 05:05:30] <louish> any ideas on how I can have snmpd listen on 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1 ?
[06-Mar-2008 05:08:15] <wassy121> hmm. It is most probably in snmpd.conf

[06-Mar-2008 05:19:21] <wassy121> Now you should be able to add the device to zenoss, and have it come up with pretty graphs and all the monitored services and whatnot.
[06-Mar-2008 05:19:36] <louish> r u running virtual servers? off one nic?
[06-Mar-2008 05:20:04] <wassy121> No, I am running smtp on the internal IP only.
[06-Mar-2008 05:20:23] <wassy121> Zen seems to be checking the external IP for the service, and failing.
[06-Mar-2008 05:20:29] <wassy121> Is my guess.
[06-Mar-2008 05:22:08] <wassy121> Man, I don't even think this SMTP service is doing anything.
[06-Mar-2008 05:22:12] <wassy121> Why is it running . . .
[06-Mar-2008 05:22:20] <wassy121> I kind of want to shut it down and see who/what complains ;-)
[06-Mar-2008 05:23:46] <louish> lol yeah
[06-Mar-2008 05:23:53] <louish> I hear yeah.
[06-Mar-2008 05:25:57] <louish> hey. do you how long it takes before zenoss will start to display data from a host? within zenoss I now have a green (snmp) link for the linux server, but under component type it says "no records found"
[06-Mar-2008 05:27:03] <wassy121> "component type"? Where is that tab/link?
[06-Mar-2008 05:27:49] <wassy121> Did you add the device after the change we made above wrt local listening socket?
[06-Mar-2008 05:28:04] <wassy121> If you added it before we fixed it, you may need to model the device.
[06-Mar-2008 05:28:28] <louish> "/Device/Server/Linux/ipaddy"
[06-Mar-2008 05:28:41] <louish> no it was already there.
[06-Mar-2008 05:29:11] <wassy121> Yeah, click on the triangle menu, manage-model device
[06-Mar-2008 05:29:47] <wassy121> It should go to a text output screen, give you some info for about 45 seconds, then you can go back into the device, and have it show like a normal machine.
[06-Mar-2008 05:31:57] <wassy121> Sweet. So, I fixed the stupid problem.
[06-Mar-2008 05:32:11] <wassy121> I enabled SMTP on all IPs, and just iptabled it out. Silly zenoss.
[06-Mar-2008 05:32:15] <louish> wow. Yeah there was quite a bit. Hey I notice that it mentioned some plug'ins were not there! Do I (should I be installing more plug-ins on the zenoss server?)
[06-Mar-2008 05:32:22] <louish> lol
[06-Mar-2008 05:32:24] <louish> really?
[06-Mar-2008 05:32:49] <wassy121> I am still new to this man. I can't really say what you "should" do.
[06-Mar-2008 05:33:18] <sr_> no..I think "snmp.portscan" will do the trick
[06-Mar-2008 05:34:08] <sr_> you need to configure the collector plugins and include snmp.portscan ... by default it is not included.
[06-Mar-2008 05:34:12] <wassy121> son of a whore. zenoss is still counting it as 'down' since it can't connect on the proper IP address.
[06-Mar-2008 05:34:26] <louish> lol
